Robert Lyon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 23, 2009 to Jan. 1, 2010.
Funeral services for Dr. Robert Emmett Lyon, age 58, longtime and loved physician of Bastrop will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 27, 2009 at First Baptist Church of Bastrop with the Reverends Allan Eppinette, Jerry Stuckey and Jim Ingram officiating. Interment will follow at the Lone Cherry Cemetery near Mangham under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 26, at Cox Funeral Home in Bastrop.

On Tuesday December 22, 2009, Dr. Robert Emmett Lyon went to his Heavenly Home while resting at his earthly home. Dr. Lyon was born in Weatherford, Texas on May 9, 1951 to Wayne Emmett and Dessie Lee Lyon. He spent many of his years of his youth in Guam and Okinawa as his father was in the Air Force. The family settled in Bossier City where he graduated from Airline High School. He attended LSU-Shreveport and LSU Medical School-Shreveport. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at LSUMC-Shreveport.

On August 10, 1974, he married Gail Austin Lyon. Upon finishing his residency, they decided to move to Bastrop in order to raise their family in a small town and have a close relationship with his patients. He was director of the ICU and EKG departments at Morehouse General Hospital. He was a Diplomat of American Board of Internal Medicine, a member of the Morehouse Parish Medical Society, Medical Director of Premier Hospice and Lagniappe Nursing Home. His love and compassion for his patients as well as excellent medical treatment was always his foremost concern.

Even though he spent long hours working, he had many hobbies that he shared with his sons and grandchildren. Bob loved flyfishing, making his own flies and rods. He hunted deer and birds and reloaded all his ammunition. His love of woodworking was exemplified by all the beautiful furniture he crafted for his loved ones. He was a passionate Harley Davidson rider and loved the LSU Tigers.

Dr. Lyon was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Lyon, and his father-in-law, William Austin.

Dr. Lyon is survived by his wife of 35 years, Gail Austin Lyon; his two sons, Matthew Lyon and wife, Annie of Sterlington and Jason Lyon and wife, Pepper of Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren, Amanda Goodson, Austin Goodson and Cooper Lyon all of Sterlington; his mother, Dessie Lee Lyon of Bossier City; two sisters, Johanna Kiper of Fountain, Colo. and Martha Gray of Bossier City. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and two God-daughters, Megan Herring of Bastrop and Annamaria Hutson of West Monroe.

Serving as pallbearers will be Dr. James Michael Smith, Dr. Clint Neatherland, Dr. John Ziegler, Dr. Jack Noble, Jamie Patrick and Charles Herring. Honorary pallbearers are Johnnie Kovac Jr., Dr. John Hardin, Dr. James Ciarvella, Dr. Scott Barron and Parnell Jones.

Any planned memorials may be made to the Snyder Museum, Morehouse Parish Library, Premier Hospice or MedCamps of Louisiana.

Gail and family:

Dr Lyons saw my dad through open heart surgery in 1991. Then in 1997, he helped us deal with dad's cancer until his passing on Dec 28. He served our family with devotion truly above and beyond the call of duty. His memory will be cherished.

I am saddened to learn about your loss of your loved one, Dr. Robert Lyon, a most compassionate Christian and devoted Physician in your community.
I,only, knew him as a very young boy but have kept up with him via his Mother, Dessie. My sister was married to Dessie's brother John Sosebee. I knew his Grandmother Lyon and Grandmother Sosebee as well as other members of both families. My niece, Jean Sosebee Carrell is Bob's first cousin.
My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your wonderful memories bring you comfort.

I had the honor to work with Bob for about 20 years taking care of and operating on many of his patients. He was truely a devoted physician, husband and father and devoted 100% of his energy to everything he did. Bastrop, it's residents and his patients are and were very fortunate to have him as their physician and friend. Many times when I talked with him on the phone-whether he called me about referring a patient or I was calling him to give him a report-I heard the chimes of the clock in his office. I will always remember him anytime I hear a clock chime. He will be dearly missed.

Just wanting you to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Dr. Lyon was truly a unique individual. I saw him just last Tuesday comforting the family of Mr. McKinney as he passed away. Although times might not have been great for him, he never forgot that others needed him. We count it a blessing to have had the opportunity to know him on earth and now looking forward to seeing him again in heaven.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Dr. Lyon. He was the physician for both of my parents (Vivian & George Love). Dr. Lyon has been a beloved doctor to them because of the great care he gave (including the early detection of an aortal hernia which literally saved my dad's life). I only met Dr. Lyon once, when I was visiting my parents and my daughter accidentally "hooked" my finger while we were fishing. He walked in the room wearing cowboy boots and a white coat! (not what I was expecting) Of course, he removed the hook without a problem, assuring me that he had performed this procedure many times before.
May God bless his family and close friends during this difficult time. I hope that his family will be comforted by the outpouring of love from the many people whose lives he touched in such a meaningful and caring way.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time of grief. Dr. Lyon will be greatly missed in our community. He took such good care and special interest in my Daddy (Gene Wise) and I will always be grateful to him for that. Dr. Lyon and Daddy will be sharing their first Christmas together in Heaven.

Gail, Matt, and Jason,
Brett and I were so glad to see Doc on Monday and be able to visit with him. He will be greatly missed by so many people, those that he touched greatly. He was always there for his patients, that's why they all loved him. I know words cannot soothe the grief you all are feeling now, but knowing he's in Heaven walking with our Lord is the best comfort we can all have. I enjoyed the many years I worked with him and that he took care of Brett, me and the rest of my family. May God comfort and bless all of you. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Gail and Family,
I am in Boston with my family but I will certainly have you in my thoughts and prayers in the days ahead. You know that Dr. Lyon was loved by so many and he touched so many both medically and spiritually. His life on earth was a wonderful testiment to others. He will be greatly missed, but he is rejoicing in Heaven with his Creator.
