Robert Malench Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 4, 2019.

EDWARDSVILLE — Robert L. Malench, 85, of Edwardsville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019, at Edwardsville Care Center. He was born Aug. 29, 1934, in Livingston, Illinois, the son of the late Henry A. & Mary (Rizzi) Malench. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda L. (Sandlin) Malench; & brother Dr. Henry L. Malench. Bob is survived by his children, Elizabeth Malench & partner Greg of Kansas City, Missouri, James Malench & wife Tonya of Columbus, Ohio, Roberta Brookshire & husband Paul of St. Peters, MO, & Stephanie Malench of Collinsville, Illinois; grandchildren Alex Brookshire, Eli Malench, Josh Malench, & Noel Malench.

Robert was the son of Italian immigrants and attended Livingston Community Schools. He attended Saint Louis University & Saint Louis University School of Medicine from 1952 to 1959, following which he completed his post-graduate internship at St. Louis City Hospital from 1959 to 1962. He then served as a captain in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964 and then was assigned to provide care and treatment to veterans at the U.S. Soldiers home in Washington, D.C. After that he joined his brother Dr. Henry Malench in private practice as a family practitioner & general surgeon. Robert was later joined in the practice by his nephews, Dr. Anthony Malench & Dr. Peter Malench. During his time in private practice he was also on the medical staff at St. Joseph Hospital in Highland, Illinois and then at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Illinois. His children still fondly recall the "black bag behind the door" which he took with him on house calls at any time of the day or night. Robert went into well-deserved retirement in 2002. His compassion for patients and others was unwavering throughout his life. He raised his children to "be exposed" to new learning opportunities both large and small, and they are eternally grateful for that. Among other things, he enjoyed reading, traveling & working in the yard. He was a witty story teller and a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals & St. Louis Blues.

His many memberships included: the American Medical Association, the Illinois State Medical Society, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, St. Boniface Catholic Church, past president of the Woodlawn Cemetery Association, Friends of the Lovejoy Library, The Missouri Botanical Gardens, St. Louis Art Museum, & the St. Louis Zoo. He was also a member of the Tuesday Morning Crew at the Benjamin Stephenson House in Edwardsville, which he enjoyed immensely, solving the world problems over coffee when their work was completed.

A private family service will be held at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville, with The Very Reverend Jeffrey Goeckner officiating. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials to Woodlawn Cemetery Assoc. or the Benjamin Stephenson House in care of Weber & Rodney Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed online at weberfuneralhome.com.

I would like to express my sympathy to the wonderful children of Dr. Robert Malench. I had the privilege of being their French teacher. May Dr. Malench rest in peace and may the children be consoled by all their wonderful family memories. What a wonderful family.

Dr. Robert Malench was an excellent physician and a wonderful person and friend. Over the years of our relationship, Jane and I went from addressing him as Dr. Malench, to Dr. Robert, to Dr. Bob, and to Bob, as our friendship progressed from professional to personal.
When Bob first retired, he joined the Tuesday Morning Group at the Stephenson House. The group does cleanup and minor repairs followed by coffee and conversation. The conversations are always wide ranging and Bob enjoyed them immensely. He had eclectic interests: politics, history, art, architecture, and books.
With a dry and subtle sense of humor, Bob could always find a humorous way to express an opinion or idea. When he first thought about joining the Tuesday Morning Group, he asked what we would be doing. We told him that it would be cleaning, repairs, and lots of painting. On his first day, we had to move all of the items from two large trailers to a new storage area. The trailers were full of doors, windows, baseboards, trim, fireplace mantels, and all of the other items salvaged from the Stephenson House. It was a cold and cloudy day, and it was a dirty job that took most of the day. At the end, he made only one comment: I thought we did a lot of painting!
At our Tuesday morning meetings, Bob always closed the meeting with a new joke. A lot of them were very funny and a lot of them were really corny, but Bob was such a good storyteller that, no matter how bad the joke was, it was always entertaining.
Bob was a kind and gentle man, a great friend, and a very good person. We shall miss him.

I had the privilege of doing volunteer work with Dr. Bob at the Stephenson House until he was no longer able to. He was a joy to work with, hopeful he would be able to come back and re-join our group, and only later did I find out what an amazing doctor he was, and how highly he was respected in the community. Dr. Bob was a modest man, and has been missed by our Tuesday group; I think we are better people for having known him. My heart and prayers go out to his family on the loss of such a wonderful person.
