Robert McKelvy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 17, 2013.
Robert Hugh McKelvy LUBBOCK-Robert H. Bob McKelvy, 82, of Lubbock, beloved husband, dad, granddad, great-grandfather, businessman and friend to many, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday afternoon, surrounded by his loved ones. Bob was a very kind, gentle and wise Christian man who reflected integrity, compassion and loyalty to all who crossed his path. He was not only the patriarch of his family, but to each of them he was larger than life. Bob was born in Memphis, Texas, on May 24, 1930, to Hugh and Tula McKelvy. He graduated from Lubbock High School in May 1948 and attended Texas Tech as a freshman before serving in the United States Air Force for two years. On March 29, 1952, he married Maxine Boyd and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past spring. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Texas Tech in 1954. Many people have known Bob and Maxine due to their 35 year ownership of McKelvy's Furniture in Lubbock. Bob was a successful and respected businessman in Lubbock for which he was honored as the Texas Retailer-of-the-Year by the Texas Retail Furniture Association. Bob had a servant's heart and devoted much of his time and energy to enhancing the lives of others through his unselfish service to church, the business community, the educational community and other organizations whose mission was to promote the dignity and success of people. He served in many civic capacities in the Lubbock community, including eight years as a member of the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees, Director of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Board of City Development, Board of Directors of the Lubbock Better Business Bureau, Vice-President of the Lubbock Retail Merchants Association, Director-Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, Vice-President of the Lubbock Rotary Club, Director- Boy Scouts, Director-Lubbock Young Men's Christian Association, Board member of Boys' Club of Lubbock, and on the Board of Directors of First Federal Savings and Loan and First National Bank of Lubbock. Bob, and wife Maxine, have been active long-time members of First United Methodist Church of Lubbock, where Bob taught Young Couples' Sunday School for many years. Bob and Maxine have three children, Robert Rob McKelvy Jr., Kevin McKelvy and wife Lana and Katherine McKelvy, all of Lubbock. They also have two grandchildren, Cody McKelvy and wife Tyler of Austin, Summer Bridwell of Lubbock, and a great-granddaughter, Finley McKelvy of Austin. The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for the loving care of Hospice of Lubbock and Visiting Angels of Lubbock as well as neighbors and friends. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, 6025 82nd Street in Lubbock. Services will be at First United Methodist Church of Lubbock at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013. The family will have a private burial at Resthaven. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Hospice of Lubbock or Second Helpings at First United Methodist Church of Lubbock. Maxine, I have so many great memories of Bob and you. He and I reported to Amarillo AFB on May 24, 1951, Bob's 21st birthday. I used to ride home with you and Bob from Amarillo when he was stationed there. We had so much fun on 31st street with Buddy, Bob Wood, J.Q. and Bob and I, and then as a Wrangler. He was a great person and I will miss him.

It was once said,People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel." Thank you Mr. McKelvy (Bob) for always making me feel accepted and loved. You will be in hearts, forever.....Jane Bridwell

Bob was one of those handful of people...and i mean 1 o2 I have met in my life that lived his character, faith, integrity without using words. He was a gentle giant and i cannot imagine there is anyone he ever met that did not feel the energy of love coming from him. He was a pillar of strength for many beyond his family, including me. He will be sadly missed but an example for future generations. I am sad but at peace that he is finally in a perfect place and away from the pain the last couple of years tormented his physical body with. Again, he carried all that with a dignity that only Bob could!

Maxine, I am saddened by your deep loss. I admired, respected, and enjoyed having Bob as a classmate, teammate, and friend at good old LHS. His obituary is deservedly glowing. I knew from those days that he would always live up to such lofty accolades. He was one of the very best of the genuine, genuinely good folks in our class. I enjoyed visiting a little with you and with Bob at a couple of “recent” class reunions. I envision him as having selected a mansion in Heaven and being in the process of furnishing it like no other.

We still have some of the fine pieces of furniture we purchase from his store these 40 years later in our Seattle home. Bob was the greatest: man of integrity, welcome, community supporter and friend. The Rev Dr. Robert D. Nicholson, former senior pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Lubbock, TX
