Robert "Bob" Allan Mewhinney, 79, of The Villages, FL, passed away on May 6th, 2016 in Sumterville, FL. Bob was born on Feb 22, 1937 in Dayton, Ohio to Albert B. Mewhinney and Florence Jean Potts Mewhinney. Bob attended Wilbur Wright High School in Dayton, OH where he was in National Honor Society. He was member of several sports teams, and set records in pole vault. Robert followed his father to Rose Polytechnic Institute and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1959. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega. He married Sharon Duck, ATO Sweetheart, and had two children: Scott Mewhinney of Lexington Park, MD and Brian Mewhinney of Indianapolis, IN Scott has two sons with his wife Lynne: Baily and Jack Mewhinney. Brian has two daughters: Morgan Schantz with her daughter Eleanor, and Maddie Mewhinney. Bob was a "fast track" manager with U.S. Civil Service in Washington. He worked in the Patent Office, Dept. of Commerce, and retired in 1984 from Dept. of Transportation. Robert lived in Annapolis for more than 20 years. He was a Commodore of Maryland Capital Yacht Club, a member of the Naval Academy Sailing Squadron, and part of a highly respected team of sailboat race managers. Married Jane Mikelait Ericson Dec. 15, 1989 in Annapolis, MD. Jane was a Certified Information Systems Auditor and Certified Internal Auditor with Blue Cross Blue Shield, and later Bank of America. Bob, Jane and crew won three consecutive national championships in the Rainbow class sailboat. Bob was the first sailing coach at Jacksonville University in Florida. After moving to The Villages, FL in 2006, Bob enjoyed golf, model yacht sailing, the golf cart drill team, model boat building and being video recorder and narrator for his wife's dance troupe. He enjoyed learning about his Irish / Scottish heritage, including trips to Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Bob chose to be cremated, and his final resting place will be with family in Terre Haute, IN. There will be a Celebration of Life for him on Friday, June 17 6:30, at Bacall Rec Ctr in The Villages.
