Robert Meyer Obituary

Published by The Ridgewood News from Oct. 5 to Oct. 6, 2010.
MEYER Robert William "Bob." On October 2, 2010, Robert William "Bob" Meyer passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital due to complications from pneumonia. He was 72 years old. Bob is survived by his daughter Heather Jones and her husband Chris of Macungie, PA; daughter Robin Terres and her husband Richard of Hingham, MA; and son Tuck and his wife Melissa of Nantucket, MA, along with grandchildren Harrison and Taylor Jones; Abigail, Carson and Marshall Terres; along with his sister Virginia Marshall of Cohasset, MN and brother Harold of Washington Depot, CT, along with the mother of his three children, Barbara Vanderbilt of Nantucket, MA. Born and raised in Bergen County, New Jersey, he was the son of Harold and Elizabeth (Prinz) Meyer. Bob was a 1957 graduate of Ridgewood High School and a 1962 graduate of Farleigh Dickinson University, where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business, and served in the United States Army, where he was honorably discharged in 1968, with the rank of Private First Class. After the Army, Mr. Meyer worked for Hess Oil and Chemical Co. as a regional sales manager, then went on to start several small, successful oil and chemical wholesale companies over the next two decades. His final endeavor was Co-owner and Vice President of Metro Oil and Chemical Corp., which was noted in the "Big 50" Chemical Giants. During his life, Mr. Meyer had been a long-time member of the Ridgewood Country Club in Ridgewood, NJ, Sankaty Golf Club in Nantucket, MA, and the Nantucket Yacht Club in Nantucket, MA. Mr. Meyer spent his summers on Nantucket with his family, enjoying the water and each other. He also enjoyed annual trips to Snowmass, CO to ski with his family; Minnesota to pheasant hunt and snowmobile with his sister, brother-in-law and son, and many trips to visit his daughters and watch his grandchildren play sports. Upon his full time retirement and residency on Nantucket, he enjoyed spending time in the summers with his children and grandchildren, long walks with his English Springer Spaniel "Scout," scalloping in the fall with his son and sons-in-laws, and tending daily to a lawn so perfect it was often confused with a putting green. Services will be held at C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral home in Ridgewood, NJ on Friday at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the America Cancer Society in his memory. www.vanemburgh.com

I worked with Bob in Ridgefield NJ for 10 years, he was the Vice president of Metro Oil and Chemical. I was just a lowly truck driver but he seemed like a nice fellow. Too bad he is gone.

I am so sad and shocked to read about Bob's passing. I will always have such great memories of Bob. He was a co-worker, friend, and wonderful listener. He always offered sound advice with a wonderful twist of humor and a smile. I loved meeting him out on the water on opening day of family scallop season. We would have broken conversations as we both pushraked in oppposing directions, each sentence finished on the next pass. Nantucket was in his blood. He had a positive outlook on life and loved his children more than anything! I will miss knowing that he is out on "the Rock". Heather, Robin, and Tuck my thoughts are with you. Amy

To the Meyer family, I am so sorry for your loss. Bob was a wonderful man! I am Chris's aunt and I have memories of Heather and Chris's wedding on Nantucket and how beautiful and special it was. It was obvious that Bob adored his children and grandchildren.
My prayers and thoughts are with you.

To the Meyer family, I was so saddened to read of Bob's death. I worked with Bob years ago at Lee Real Estate on Nantucket and always enjoyed his sense of humor and upbeat personality. It was always so nice to run into Bob after we both left Lee Real Estate. He loved to talk about his children and grandchildren and clearly loved his time with all of you. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
