Rome - Dr. Robert Orr Middlemas III, 86, passed away on September 22, 2025, in
Rome, Georgia. A devoted physician, veteran, and family man, Rob lived a life marked by service, curiosity, and deep affection for those around him.
Born on March 9, 1939, in St. Petersburg, Florida, Rob spent his formative years in his hometown, attending elementary through high school there. He went on to graduate from the University of Florida in 1961 and earned his medical degree from the University of Miami in 1965.
Following medical school, Rob answered the call to serve his country by joining the U.S. Army Medical Corps. From 1965 to 1970, he completed his internship and residency in pediatrics at Brooke General Hospital at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. He then served as Chief of Pediatrics at Raymond W. Bliss Army Hospital at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. During his military tenure, he attained the rank of temporary Major.
After completing his military service, Rob moved to Tallahassee and joined the practice of Drs. Rainey Oven and Ray McCallister. They were soon joined by Drs. Charles Long and Sue Cross, forming Tallahassee Pediatrics. Rob continued with the practice for over 40 years and together they provided compassionate care to countless children and families.
Rob's life was enriched by his love for music and community. While living in Tallahassee, he sang in the choir at Christ Presbyterian Church-a joyful expression of faith that brought him great fulfillment. After moving to
Rome, Georgia, he became a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church where he found joy working with the breakfast committee and engaging with fellow parishioners.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Marie Cantey Middlemas; son Robert Scott Middlemas (Jennifer); daughter Jill Anne Middlemas Dechow (Niels); stepdaughter Camille Schroeder Temple (Bill); grandchildren Nolan Victor Middlemas, McKaylee Natalia Middlemas, and Josefin Zoe Dechow; and step-grandchildren Kathleen Camille Temple, Grace Marie Temple, and William Brooke Temple.
Rob was preceded in death by his father Robert Orr Middlemas Jr., mother Lucille Hale Middlemas, and first wife Kaye Clements Middlemas.
A man of wide-ranging interests and boundless curiosity, Rob had a passion for history and relished sharing insights about how things worked-whether it was a historical event or something as simple as slicing an avocado just right. He enjoyed smart conversation and embraced new experiences with enthusiasm. His love for golf offered both recreation and camaraderie throughout his life.
Rob was a loving husband, father, grandfather-and teacher in every sense of the word. Those who knew him were enriched by his wisdom and warmth.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
