Robert Moore Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 21, 2025.
Robert Arle Moore, 93, passed away on April 10, 2025, in Davenport, Florida. Born on June 17, 1931, in Houlka, Mississippi, Bob lived a life marked by dedication to his country, intellectual achievement, and personal perseverance.

Bob earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southern California and devoted the majority of his professional life to National Defense. His distinguished career included roles within the U.S. Department of Defense and later as a consultant to major companies in the defense industry.

Notably, he served as Deputy Undersecretary at the Department of Defense. He also served as Deputy Director and subsequently, Director, Tactical Technology Office, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, (DARPA). His contributions are recognized in the book "The Imagineers of War: The Untold Story of DARPA, the Pentagon Agency That Changed the World" by Sharon Weinberger.

He was awarded the Secretary of Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Medal by Secretary Harold Brown for exceptionally meritorious service as Deputy Director and subsequently, Director, Tactical Technology Office, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). President Carter awarded him the rank of "Meritorious Executive in the Senior Executive Service" for sustained superior accomplishment in management of programs of the United States Government and for noteworthy achievement of quality and efficiency in the Pubic Service.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Bob embraced personal challenges with vigor. At age 75, he began running and completed ten marathons between the ages of 75 and 82. He also enjoyed playing tennis and remained physically active well into his later years.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce Yawn Moore; his children Michael Todd Moore, Patti Bridget Moore, Suzanne Ruth Moore, and Robert Loren Moore; his grandchildren Jessie Alanis, Heidi Moore, and Lauren Moore; and great-grandchildren Kailani Hinojosa, Caeden Hinojosa, Arden Alanis, Adam Moore, and Abigail Moore. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Ruth McKnight and David Arle Moore.

Services were private. Family has respectfully asked that there be no flowers.

A man who combined intellectual rigor with physical endurance and deep patriotism, Bob leaves behind a legacy of service and strength. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

I am saddened to hear about the passing of Robert Moore. He was an inspiration to me. I worked for him when he worked at the Pentagon and it was a pleasure to be around him. I will never forget when he gave me a model of a jet plane that they were designing at the Pentagon. I wish I still had it. He was intelligent, gentle, understanding and a role model. I am proud to have known him and I will never forget my memories of him. May God bless him and may he continue to be the angel he was here on Earth.

Below from email from Dave Olsen, who worked with Bob on some projects, and a close personal friend:

"Wise, a fierce patriot, honest to a fault, the accolades keep coming. I am proud to have known him, a great friend and am still in awe that he was running marathons in his eighties when the best I can do is walk the dog for a mile each morning.
You'll always be welcome at our home in Florida or ranch in SD."

I have great memories if Uncle Bob and all of them left me with such awe. From tennis to algebra homework, he really was a man of many talents. Thinking if you, Aunt Joy. So glad that you got 45 wonderful years together.

I took a college course called Astro space systems in 2004. I´m not sure if I ever mentioned it to Uncle Bob. Teaching the class was Professor Carl Gould at Webber (I´m surprised I remember his name but then realize I remember ever teachers name though undergrad). He was a former Astro space engineer. Knowing he work a lot of top secret projects, I asked him out our curiosity if he ever worked with my uncle Bob, knowing he worked a lot of military contracts, and directly with the department of defense. He told me that he worked with him working on the `Titan Project´. He said the project was still classified at that time so he did not disclose more details, but did have nice things to say about Uncle Bob and worked with him and knew of him well with admiration. I just thought it was such a small world.
