Robert Nachshin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 14 to Oct. 15, 2022.
Robert Jay Nachshin passed away on October 14, 2022 in Los Angeles, California from complications of Huntington's Disease. He was 72.

A prominent lawyer in Los Angeles, Bob spent his career practicing family law, where he was esteemed by his clients for his expertise and empathetic approach to divorce, prenuptial agreements, custody issues, and other sensitive and complex subjects. He counted professional athletes, musicians, actors, business people and celebrities among his clients. He was most proud of his successful representation of MLB star Barry Bonds In re Marriage of Bonds, which led to a change in California law on premarital agreements.

Bob was born in the Bronx and grew up in Oceanside, New York, the son of Eleanor and Edward Nachshin. He graduated cum laude from Bucknell University, where he was student body president and is remembered for cancelling the Homecoming Parade in protest of the Vietnam War. He continued his education at Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs (Master of International Affairs) and the Columbia Law School (Juris Doctor), where he met his future wife, Monica Lipkin, on the first day of law school. After law school, Bob and Monica moved to Los Angeles, where Bob began his law career at Loeb and Loeb, later continuing as a partner at such prestigious firms as Greenberg Glusker and Jeffer Mangels. He founded his own firm in 1990.

In addition to the practice of law, Bob was passionate about traveling, hiking, and the great outdoors - even after four decades in Los Angeles, he never lost his native New Yorker's delight at the sunny weather and lack of snow. He was an avid follower of politics and never missed the nightly news. His favorite years were always presidential election years. He was a longtime member of Leo Baeck Temple and devoted his time, money, and energy to supporting charitable causes such as AMFAR. Bob's love of food led him to support both up-and-coming and established restauranteurs. Bob also had a lifelong love of theatre, which he honed from a young age at summer camp. Friends from both the east and west coasts will remember his larger-than-life sense of humor, conviviality, and verve. His family will remember his devotion, tenacity, and resilience. A born extrovert, Bob loved nothing more than to be surrounded by friends and family.

He was predeceased by his mother, Eleanor Nachshin, and his father, Edward Nachshin. In addition to his wife of more than forty-six years, Monica Lipkin Nachshin, Bob is survived by his daughter Elana Nachshin (Lucy Turner) and his son Remington Nachshin (Kate Frankel). He is also survived by his sister, Judith Nachshin; his stepmother, Phyllis Nachshin; brother-in-law, Jordan Lipkin (Elayne); and nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made at https://give.bucknell.edu/adf specially to the Eleanor Nachshin Scholarship Fund at Bucknell University which supports students with special medical needs.

Bob was my divorce lawyer in the early 80s. I could not have been an easy client between the fact that I am also a lawyer, and the contest for custody of my daughter was intense. I always felt that Bob knew all the facts and the law and was devoting himself completely to the case. I remained friends with Bob for years, but sadly did not see much of him in the 10 years or so before he passed. I miss him.
