Robert Ness Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 24, 2007.
OBITUARY ROBERT BURKE NESS Suddenly at his home in Montreal on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 of Mr. Robert Burke Ness, formerly of Borden, P.E.I., aged sixty-two years. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on September 18, 1945, Robert grew up on Prince Edward Island. After studying at St. Dunstan's University, he worked briefly at the Bank of Nova Scotia before moving on to work in the stock exchange in both Montreal and Toronto. It was in Toronto that he opened a small antique shop beginning a life-long affair with antiques. Eventually settling in Montreal, he opened his antique shop "L'Obsession", where, for many years assisted by Barbara Behr, he pursued a career, which he loved and enjoyed for almost 40 years. Widely regarded as an expert in the many facets of the antique business, he was held in high esteem as both an owner and an antique show promoter. Robert is survived by his parents Michael "Mike" and Moira (nee Burke) Ness of Cornwall, P.E.I., sisters Margaret Doyle of Charlottetown, Elizabeth (John), brothers, Michael (Karen), David (Pat) all of Halifax, and Paul (Christine) of Cornwall, also his many, well-loved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother William. Robert will be sadly missed by his many friends and associates in the antique community, not only in Montreal but also throughout North America and internationally. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Cornwall, P.E.I. on Friday, October 26, 2007 at 11 a.m., followed by a reception from 12 noon - 2 p.m. Interment in St. Peters Cemetery, Seven Mile Bay, P.E.I. A remembrance of Roberts life will be celebrated in Montreal at a future date. Family flowers only. Memorial donations in Roberts memory to a charity of choice would be appreciated. Completion of funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hennessey Funeral Home. On line condolences may be made at www.islandowned.ca .

My mother and I have been very saddened by Roberts' sudden death. We had known him for close to thirty years through our common love of antiques. We often visited him at his store and at antique shows. Robert was a wonderful, kind and honest person that we will always remember and miss. We send our condolences to his family and close friends.

We were neighbors to Robert for several winter seasons at the "Seabird" in Pompano Beach, FL.
We strongly affirm all the positive comments about Robert, and know of no negative aspects.
He was so kind and gentle to us.
One night he even prepared a delicious osso bucco dinner which we shall never forget.
We shall miss you Robert! We know that the Lord will rejoice in having you in "the mansion with many rooms" in the promised heaven.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Bob's passing. I met Bob many years ago when I was 18 years old,and doing the Place Bonaventure Antique Show.Through the years I would see Bob and chat with him at the various antique shows ,or in his shop in Montreal. He was such a wonderful person, and a true gentleman. He possesed truly rare qualities and manners seldom seen in many people these days. Bob will be truly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him. My sincere condolences to his family and to his close friend Barbara Behr.

We met Bob through the antique business. He had a unerring eye for beauty and quality. For many years we took a booth at the Bonaventure Antiques Show. It was always a pleasure. We will remember him as a kind and gentle person. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

Robert was a real gentleman, a rare breed these days. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family. To say he will be missed understates the fact that this loss diminishes us all. Be assured of our prayers and best wishes to those most affected, especially to Barbara Behr.

Gentleman tu as vécu, gentleman tu resteras.

Bob and I became friends when we met as next door neighbours in June, 1969. I was involved in the antiques business, and it was not long before he started buying and selling with me. It marked the beginning of a new career which spanned almost forty years. He truly excelled in the business and was extraordinarily well respected amongst his peers and associates.
My sincere condolences to the family.

My sincere condolences to the family and Barbara Behr. I first met Bob when I was just 17. I enjoyed many stays with him, along with my long time friend Erin (Ness). He always treated me like gold. I loved his kind ways and wisdom. He was like my very own Uncle. I'll never forget him.

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Our thoughts are with you, and his valued associate, Barbara, as well as his friend Alan, at this time. We met Robert through the antique bisiness nigh 40 years ago and have maintained a close, friendly relationship through gatherings at our home and dinners at his favorite restauranr "Bonaparts" in Montreal.
