Robert Osborn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 22, 2022.
Robert Osborn, of Palm Desert, CA, passed away in Carmichael, CA, exactly 83 years to the day he was born.

As a youth, he was known to friends and family as 'Jim' and later in life as 'Bob'. Bob was born to Russell and Mary and grew up in the suburbs west of Chicago in Villa Park, IL. He was the youngest of 4 children with sisters Betty, Evelyn and Teresa. As a child he was active in the Cub Scouts and enjoyed attending Cubs games at Wrigley Field and collecting baseball and football cards.

Bob graduated from DePaul University in Chicago with a degree in Accounting in 1961 and went to work with PricewaterhouseCoopers traveling around the Midwest performing audits. In 1968, he purchased a Volkswagen Westphalia campervan and spent 3 months traveling west via Wyoming, Montana and British Columbia, Canada before landing in San Francisco. In San Francisco, he negotiated a temporary accounting assignment which would allow him to return to the west coast and eventually settle in the San Francisco Bay Area.

In 1969, Bob met his future wife Jane through a Catholic young adults group at their Church and were married in 1970. After buying their first home in Daly City they started their family when son Jimmy was born in 1971 and Bobby in 1973. In spring of 1974, the family relocated to Foster City down the Peninsula and moved into the home they would reside in for 27+ years.

Bob supported the family as an Accountant with construction company Guy F. Atkinson in South San Francisco for many years before working at Pacific Mechanical Corporation in Concord for 10 years before taking an early retirement.

Bob enjoyed attending Giants and 49er games and adopted them as his new favorite teams. He coached his sons soccer teams and was an Indian Guides Tribe leader. Ski trips to Lake Tahoe and Reno in the campervan with his sons was another favorite pastime. He was a regular blood donor for many years and a parishioner at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Palm Desert. He was known among friends for being quiet and kind.

In 2001, Bob and Jane retired to the resort lifestyle of Del Webb's Sun City in Palm Desert, CA. He volunteered in the computer lab and practiced Tai Chi most mornings. Bob enjoyed trips to the East Coast and to Europe to visit historic sites with Jane, playing billiards with friends and hiking the hills of the Coachella Valley and Joshua Tree National Park. He also liked taking his dogs Clancy, Scotty and Charlie for walks in addition to volunteering at local golf and tennis tournaments.

Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years Jane, his son Jim and Bob, daughter in-laws Alicia and Amie, and his grandchildren Dean, Charlotte and Abby.

Memorial will be private with family only. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.
