Robert (Bob) Nathan Pass (March 27, 1944 – June 16, 2022)
Bob was born in Providence Rhode Island, attended East Providence High School followed by Brown University where he played collegiate tennis, graduating in 1966. He went on to law school at George Washington University where he earned his JD. After working as a trial attorney for the Federal Power Commission (now the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) he left the practice of law to pursue his passion, tennis.
In 1973, Bob founded the 4Star Tennis Academy with just 12 girls at the Four Seasons Tennis Club in Merrifield, VA. Under Bob’s leadership the program grew, training thousands of USTA ranked boys and girls. The Pass Academy, renamed in his honor, will continue to live on by teaching the philosophies of tennis, and the dedication, passion, sportsmanship and humility that was Bob Pass.
In the words of one of his students, “Bob was a coach, but more than that, he was a mentor, friend, advocate and sage wiseman. The rankings and wins were the outcome of his real passion – to teach us and mold us into good humans.”
Bob achieved the honor of being elected in to the Middle Atlantic Tennis Association (now USTAMAS) Hall of Fame for his coaching and his program was given the national award of USTA Developmental Program of the Year. Bob was also awarded the UST Maryland District “Maury Schwartsman” Award for Player Development. Over the course of his career, he served as the Director of Tennis at the Four Seasons Tennis Club, Riverbend Country Club, Edgemore Club, Landon School, Georgetown Preparatory School, and coach of the girls’ varsity tennis team at Bullis School.
With his daughter Hannah Pass Butler, son-in-law Greg Butler, grandchildren Charlie and Eileigh Butler, sister Linda Pass Armstrong, his nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and countless pros and students he leaves a legacy of kindness, generosity, fairness, philanthropy and opportunity for all those who love the sport of tennis.
A memorial service for Bob is being planned for this Fall.

I still have trouble accepting that Bob is gone. He was the brother I never had. I can still see his smile and hear his laugh. I can vividly recall his valiant efforts to play Mississippi John Hurt tunes on that beautiful D-35 (I think) guitar. We had good times together

My husband Jerry Weiss and I first met Bob at River Bend Country Club in the mid 1970's. We appreciated his dedication to tennis and his very calm teaching style. Not long after, we signed up our younger son Andy for lessons. The rest, they say, is history. Andy and Bob spent the next 12 years or so together in a very positive working relationship which resulted in Andy realizing his dream of playing college tennis. Bob was a mentor and friend to Andy. He was also our friend.
I send my deepest sympathies to his family.

My best friend. I dreamed about you a few nights ago and sent a text to ask how you were doing. When I didn´t get a Bob-like optimistic response, I felt a pall come over me. I searched for you on line and learned you had moved on. I am irretrievably saddened by your absence. We were law school roommates and tennis pals forever. Right down to the last shrimp ( a reference no one but us would understand). With tears in my eyes I say goodbye.

Bob and I were classmates at Brown and fraternity brothers there. While we stayed in close touch in the years after graduation, one of my regrets is not having initiated more frequent contacts since then. Thankfully Bob came to our 50th reunion and he was the same good friend we all remembered. My wife Ellen and I extend our sincere condolences. Jim & Elenn Franco
