PLEWA
ROBERT ANDREW "COACH"
After a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, January 19, 2007 at the early age of 63 in Whitehall. Beloved husband of Anna Maria (Kardash) Plewa for 31 years. He is survived by his brothers John (Barbara) Plewa of Cresson, Joseph (Betty) Plewa of Cresson, sister Patty (Dick) Clawson of Cresson, brother-in-law Steven Slebodnick, mother-in-law Stefania Kardash of Ambridge, brother-in-law Boyd (Maria) Kardash of No. Potomac, MD, Aunt Mary Plewa of Harrisburg, Aunt Zelda Carrig of Kenmore, NY, Aunt Pauline Plewa of Gallitzin, Uncle Sonny McMullen of Ashville, and Uncle Robert McMullen of Kenmore, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents Alda and Andrew Plewa, his father-in-law Michael Kardash, his sister Regina Slebodnick, his niece Tammy Hott, and his nephew Joseph Plewa. He will be sadly missed by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews. Following his service in the US Army, he attended Eastern Kentucky University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in teaching. Although most of his career was spent in the Brentwood School District as a physical education and health teacher, he also taught at Hollidaysburg, Bishop McCort, and Richmond, VA. With a passion for playing athletics since his youth, he devoted countless hours as a head high school basketball coach at Brentwood, Ambridge, and Northgate and as the Athletic Director at Brentwood for many years. Through his teaching and coaching talents, he touched countless young lives and positively impacted generations of students and athletes throughout his career. His dedication, talent, and tireless pursuit of excellence on and off the basketball court led Bob and his players to a multitude of victories and honors, including at least ten section titles and led Brentwood to the 1989 State Championship Title Game. In addition, he traveled overseas as a basketball coach / Delegation Leader with the People to People Sports Ambassadors organization. His favorite pastimes included playing cards with his devoted Ambridge friends, fishing with his family, golfing, attending sporting events with his friends from Brentwood and Ambridge, spending time with his dogs Putsin and Holly as well as his cat Chi-Chi, and doting upon his wife Anna Maria and his "MOTHER"-in-law Stefania Kardash and all his family. Visitation will be held Monday January 22nd at the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., (412) 881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15527 from 2-4 and 7-9. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday January 23rd from 2-4 and 6-8 at JOHN SYKA FUNERAL HOME, 833 Kennedy Drive, Ambridge with the Parastas at 7:00 p.m. On Wed., Jan. 24th, a service will be conducted at the Syka Funeral Home at 12 Noon followed by Divine Liturgy at 12:30 p.m. in SS. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Church, Ambridge. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 404 - 6th Street, Ambridge, PA 15003 for the Centennial Renovation Fund (724) 266-2262.

Mrs. Plewa I’m sorry for your loss, and I wanted to let you know that I was always close with Mr. Plewa he was the first person that taught me any kind of basketball skill and a big motivator in my life. He was the first one to teach me the right way to shoot a basketball and the best game I ever played in high school was when we played his team when he coached at Northgate because he pushed me everyday and told me how well of a player he thought that I was, but he was sorry that his team was going to beat us because they had two big guys that I couldn’t stop. Well after the game he said to me “You had one heck of a game, and I knew that you would be ready for this game I just wanted to see how you would respond to all of the hype.” He was a great coach, friend, and an excellent role model. Mrs. Plewa you have my sympathy and if you ever need anything out of me I will help you out just give me a call you probably still have my number under the bad kids list in class I think my number is on speed dial still.

Dear Mrs Plewa, I was very sorry to hear of the passing of your husband. I had the opportunity to play for Bob during the '74-'75 season, his first at Brentwood. He was an excellent coach and instilled a strong work ethic in our team. He came in and turned the program around his first year. I'm thankful that I had the opportunity to play for him. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

Mrs. Plewa
I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your husband. This came as a shock to me as I did not know he was ill. I remeber him attending our bb games as the AD--he didn't just attend the games and put in time -- he watched them! I must say, he did get the best practice times though! While student teaching with you, I could see the love you had for him. I send my prayers to you and your family during this difficult time. If you happen to view this, can you let me know if you still live in Whitehall --as I have heard otherwise. My sympathies....

Dear Mrs. Plewa. I had the honor and privilege of playing basketball at Brentwood under Coach Plewa during the years 1974 through 1977. The things that he taught me both on and off the court I have used in coaching my youth teams and in my own life. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Mr. Plewa was an unbelievable mentor for me on and off the court. He was like a 2nd father to me and I find myself using many of the life lessons he taught me on a regular basis in my every day life. He was a great friend to my Dad. He will be sorely missed and never forgotten. My prayers are with his entire family and with all those who had the pleasure to have called him Coach and Friend.

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Plewa was a great teacher and a great coach. He not only was one of my teachers at school but he taught me at a summer basketball camp at Brentwood Park and it was so much fun because of him. I have fond memories of Mr. Plewa and I am sure your memories will get you through these hard times. God Bless.

Mrs. Plewa, I am so sorry for your loss. Your husband was a very important and positive influence on me during my years at Brentwood. I still treasure those Christmas Eve bonding experiences (i.e. practices) and the teamwork he taught us. I also remember fondly the support you gave us. I wish I had told him personally of my gratitude, but I will have to thank you instead. My family and I are thinking of you and praying for you and Coach Plewa. Best wishes and thank you.

Mrs. Plewa,
I am saddened to hear of the loss of Mr. Plewa. His absolute passion for the game of basketball instilled that same life-long passion for the game in his players. We'll all think fondly of him as we teach our own children and grandchildren the right way to play the game. His legacy is far from over.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Plewa. I only had him as a teacher for one year, as well as Senora Plewa, and both of my brothers had each of you. However, Brentwood was such a close family school that everyone knew everyone; it didn’t matter how many years you had a particular teacher. All of the teachers cared for each student. My family has you in our thoughts during this time.

I was so sorry to hear of your loss. You guys are in my prayers and my heart. I did not know Mr. Plewa very well though I have met him a few times. I was a student of Mrs. Plewa for most of my high school career. Mr. and Mrs. Plewa were two of the last remaining "dinosaurs" of Brentwood High School. and to know that there is one less phenominal teacher in this world is sad.

Dear Mrs. Plewa,

I had Mr. Plewa for gym class in 7th grade and again in 12th grade.
(You were also my teacher!)
Mr. Plewa was a tough teacher or so it seemed in 7th grade, but as the years went on and I had him again as a high school senior, I realized that he was very funny and friendly. I learned that he absolutely adored you and that he loved to tickle your feet because it made you laugh very hard!

Please accept my condolences in the loss of your husband.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
