Published by Contra Costa Times on Feb. 25, 2009.
Robert Siddoway Poole April 15, 1924 ~ Feb. 13, 2009 Resident of Danville Died after a prolonged respiratory illness in Danville. Bob was born in Rexburg, Idaho. He was raised in Idaho and moved to California to serve in the Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre in World War 2. After serving in the Philippines and China, he returned to the United States and studied civil engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948. He married Arlene Robertson in 1946. He worked as a surveyor for the city of San Francisco and later joined Safeway Stores, where he eventually became head of the store design department. Upon "retirement" from Safeway in the 1980s, he began a second career as an independent financial consultant, which he continued up to his formal retirement in 2006. He was an avid golfer and was a member of Castlewood Country Club for more than 20 years and served on its Board of Directors. He was greatly fond of food and wine; read voraciously; and was a talented artist and craftsman. He had a rare combination of charm and curmudgeonly wit. He is survived by his brother, Frank S. Poole, of New Cumberland, PA; his sister, Dr. Catherine Poole, of West Chester, PA; his daughter, Anne Poole Rittmaster, of San Ramon; his sons, Dr. Michael Poole, of Devon, PA, and John Poole, of Danville; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Poole, in 2001. The family wishes to express its gratitude for the excellent care and compassion shown to our father by the physician and nursing staff of San Ramon Regional Medical Center and Danville Rehabilitation Center. No services are planned.
