Robert Powell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 31, 2015.
Robert Lee Powell, Sr.

On January 30, 2015, our Father died peacefully while at home in Springfield, VA. He was lovingly known as "Pop," "Daddy," "Pinky," and "Bobby." Born June 22, 1927, in Alexandria, VA. Dad grew up in Alexandria, VA, left high school to serve in the US Navy from 1945-1946, as Seaman First Class. He returned to George Washington High School where he graduated in 1948.

He spent his life of 87 years, mostly in Virginia, but travelled and worked throughout the US. We fondly remember the time spent with his family including our Aunts Helen, Doris, Shirley and Uncles Ralph, Junie (Percy), twin brother Dick, and many cousins!

Mom and Dad raised us in Springfield and devoted their entire lives to not only their immediate family but inclusive family and community. Dad enjoyed baseball from grade school through his retirement and when no longer able to play, coached and volunteered at and raised monies for local athletes. His love of the game instilled in both of us an appreciation and love for the game and competition and the fine art of "play." Dad, as everyone remembers, was the ultimate Steam Train enthusiast and shared his love with us with trips to railways, excursions, model trains and a child's view of wonder!
Dad was known as Grandpa and Granddaddy Powell and was the proudest man when with his Granddaughter Cheryl. As his only Grandchild, he spent every possible moment he could with her and supported her throughout her life and loved her every breath! He was always proud of her and thought of her daily, until the day of his death.

On September 10, 1992, Dad and Peggy were married and now the family was complete again. Peggy loved and supported Dad for over 22 years and provided strength and love to our family through the years. Peggy was known as Grandma Peggy and later with the twins, Gammaw! Peggy was and is such a gift to our family from the older to the very young!

In 2013, Dad was blessed with the birth of his identical twin great grandbabies, Avik and Aidan, who spent 10 months in Virginia getting to know him. They knew they were loved and enjoyed their time with their "PopPop!" Having the opportunity for our 4 generations to spend time together was an unforgettable experience!

The last few years remained a struggle for Pop, but he never complained and often fell weakened by the terrible disease of Myelodysplastic Syndromw (MDS) as well as dementia. It is not these last few years that we remember him by.

Although, the ending for Dad showed us that he was truly courageous and strong to the very end. He retained his sense of humor until his final days and even today can make us laugh!

To our Daddy, Pop, Grandpa and PopPop, we love you so much! You will be missed but we will carry your spirit with us daily through our lives!
Thank you for the love, joy and LIFE that you gave us!

I bowled with Bobby for over 25 years, starting in 1981. He was always a lot of fun, a fiery guy, a great competitor, and a good friend. Nothing fired us up more than his big arm swing, fist pump, and yell when he thought he had a strike! During the summer, I always appreciated an invite for my family to enjoy crabs in his backyard. It all went by in the blink of an eye! My condolences to all the family. RIP Big Daddy.....you will definitely be missed!
