Unforgettable smiles, adventures, leadership - an amazing life

Robert Pratt Rich Jr.

August 25, 1930 June 14, 2023

Robert Pratt Rich Jr., a guy who had a real connection with the land and an unstoppable spirit, lived a life that was all about passion and unforgettable experiences. From his early days managing a dairy farm to his final chapter at the beautiful Tuckahoe Creek Farm, where he hung out with his beloved Newfoundlands, horses, and wide-open pastures, Robert was truly a farmer at heart through his life.

Bob always set the bar high, and his commitment to excellence left a lasting impression on his family and community. He was a natural leader who went above and beyond for his community. Whether he was coaching his son's baseball team, serving as a church Deacon in Princeton, or chairing the Planning Commission in Goochland County Virginia, Robert led by example and inspired those around him to aim for excellence.

When it came to supporting and loving his wife Dorothy, Bob was an unwavering force. Through her triumphs and struggles, he stood strong by her side both in her business and through major personal challenges. He was Dorothy's anchor through her battle with ovarian cancer. Later, as she fearlessly took on triathlons, Bob became her super triathlon 'sherpa' on three different continents. His love was a driving force that propelled her forward and helped her achieve her dreams.

Adventure and love of travel ran through Bob's veins. From horse-trekking in South Africa to immersing himself in the grandeur of the New Year's Eve philharmonic concert and ball at the palace in Vienna, he embraced life's adventures. One of his fondest memories was a surprise weekend meetup with Dorothy at the famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore

But Bob wasn't just an adventurer and a loving supporter. He was an avid (and quirky) collector with a passion for gathering hotel soaps from over 30 countries, barn plates that told stories of days gone by, and a vast assortment of carefully crafted tractor models. These collections reflected his insatiable curiosity and showcased the diverse interests that made him who he was. And, as a voracious reader of history/biography, he went through 500 page tomes every few weeks

In the business world, Bob was a true leader, in the US and internationally. After a successful corporate career as the global new products director for a company that's now part of Pfizer, he embarked on a second chapter as the director of international marketing for the Virginia Department of Agriculture. Through his hard work, he helped local companies expand their reach and boost their exports, making a lasting impact on the economic landscape.

As memories of Bob flood the minds of those he touched, his infectious smile and bright eyes remain etched in their hearts. His quick wit added sparkle to conversations, and his presence commanded respect and admiration. To those closest to him, he was a mentor and an inspiration.

Bob will be missed by so many in his family - Sister Meliss Herman; son Mark Rich and wife Diane; son Jonathon's (dec.) wife Bonnie, daughter Roxanne Robinson and husband Mark - and grandchildren/great grandchildren across these families.

Robert Pratt Rich Jr., a man of integrity, resilience, and boundless love, has left an immeasurable void in our lives. Yet, his legacy lives on through the cherished memories, values, and spirit he instilled in all who knew him. May his epic adventures and infectious smiles continue to inspire us, and may his spirit soar high in the realms of eternity.

Feeling bad that Loo and I can't be there. If only we had known before Monday night. Loo and their grandpa shared the same birthday and they celebrated together - in Virginia or New York for so many years! Bob - I know you will be with us in spirit on August 25, when you celebrate your first birthday in Heaven. And we will be thinking about you too, Dorothy.

Bob and Dorothy will forever be a part of our family's story. We are so grateful for them and their generous hospitality. Bob was so warm and kind to us even though he barely knew us at first.
