Robert (Robbie) Benson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 17, 2025.

Our hearts are broken as we mourn the passing of Robbie Benson on February 17, 2024. Born and raised in Troy, Michigan, Robbie eventually found his true home in Bend, Oregon, where he spent most of his life.

Robbie was born on March 24, 1972, to William (Bill) and Sharon Benson. He was a beloved brother to Steve, Heather, and Mike. And the absolute coolest Uncle to Ali, Jake, Lyndsey, Cash, and Cora.

After high school, Robbie and a group of close friends packed up their cars and set off for the West, chasing adventure and a different way of life. They landed in Bend, Oregon, and never looked back - snowboarding Mt. Bachelor, skateboarding every chance they got, and soaking up all the freedom and joy that life in the mountains could offer.

A self-taught welder with a natural creative gift, Robbie went on to found his own custom welding and fabrication business, Project 72. His one-of-a-kind pieces are featured in homes and spaces throughout the Bend area - a lasting testament to his craftsmanship, passion, and talent. Robbie had a unique ability to succeed at whatever he set his mind to.

He lived life with fierce passion and authenticity. Whether it was blasting music, quoting movies, skating in his vans, snowboarding, fishing the Deschutes River, or hiking endless trails with his dogs - first Dewey, then Samos. Robbie found joy in the moment and peace in nature.

His laugh was infectious, his spirit unforgettable. He had a heart of gold and a rare ability to make others feel truly seen. Known for his quick wit, endless 'Robbie-isms,' and love of connection, he had a way of lighting up any room. While others would call him a master of many things, Robbie liked to call himself 'AAB' (Average At Best) - a humility that made him all the more endearing.

Robbie's 17+ years of sobriety were a quiet but powerful inspiration to many. His journey and strength continue to touch lives and remind us of the impact one person can make simply by showing up with honesty, heart, and humor.

Robbie leaves behind a space in the world that can never be filled - but his smirky smile, contagious laugh, and generous soul will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him.
