ROBERT RUMMELL Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 22 to Aug. 23, 2011.
RUMMELL, ROBERT MACKENZIE, husband of Gail McWhorter Rummell, formerly of Birmingham, died in Pittsboro, North Carolina, on July 24 at age 93. Born in Buffalo, New York, on October 12, 1917, he grew up in Oxnard, Calif, and graduated from Pomona College. His graduate work in biology at the University of California, Berkeley, was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the Pacific Theater on the Navy aircraft carrier U.S.S. Suwannee. After the war, he embarked on a long career in international banking, which took him and his family to Panama, Mexico City and London. He retired from the Chase Manhattan Bank in 1980 and returned to the United States, living in Massachusetts and, finally, North Carolina. Besides his wife of 59 years, he is survived by two sons, Alexander Rummell of Birmingham and Robert Rummell Jr. of Lawrence, Kansas, a daughter, Abigail Rummell Joseph of McLean, Virginia, and six grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at Elmwood Cemetery on Wednesday, August 24, 11 a.m.

"My grandfather was many things to many different people, but to me, he was the most loving and caring man in the entire world. He was always ready to give you a kiss on the cheek or a pat on the back. I will forever remember him by his thoughtfulness through hard times and his ability to love his family. He truly was an outstanding person."
Love,
Isabel

Robert was my uncle and he was always the gentleman. He was very engaging and made our conversations most interesting. He loved his family and it was an honor to know him. He was loved dearly and will be missed. My prayers go out to my Aunt Gail and my cousins.

Love,
Stephen McWhorter
