Robert Shafer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 24, 2023.
In loving memory of Robert Walker Shafer, 77, of Raleigh, NC, who peacefully passed away on November 17, 2023. Born on July 27, 1946, in Ohio, Bob's life was a testament to the values of kindness, integrity, and unwavering dedication to his family.

Bob married his high school sweetheart Marg, and they had two children, Scott and Lisa. He was an amazing father who spent every weekend camping with his family.

Bob loved to race. He started with enduro motorcycles. When we moved to North Carolina he quickly took up Hobie Cat racing where he won the Governor's Cup and many other races. He also raced windsurfers. Bob found solace and joy in the great outdoors.

When Bob discovered bicycle riding; he had found his true love and passion. He was an iconic member of the Gyros Bicycle Club where he was known affectionately as "TallBob." Bob was almost always found in the front of the peloton.

In his professional life, Bob achieved remarkable success at IBM. After his tenure at IBM, Bob was able to make his dreams come true as he became the proud owner of two thriving bicycle shops, Cycle Center, one located in Raleigh's Mission Valley and one in Durham's 9th Street district.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Robert cherished his personal relationships. He leaves behind his wife, Linda, daughter, Lisa, son, Scott, granddaughter Grace and his stepson Sam. His love and devotion to his family were unwavering, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A private ceremony will be held to honor Robert's life and legacy.

As we celebrate his memory, let us remember the impact he made on our lives and the profound influence he had on the cycling community.
May his soul find eternal peace and his memory forever be a source of inspiration. Words can't express the holes left in our hearts.

Enjoy your final ride "TallBob", you will be missed beyond measure. Your loving Family

Dad; I still have a hard time believing you are gone. You truly are my favorite person in the world. I miss you and love you so much. You were and always will be my hero. The very greatest dad I could have asked for. I was lucky to have spent countless hours with you as an adult. We worked together in Seattle. We went to so many dinners and movies. I would give everything I have and more for one more day with you. I wish I had seen you more over the last two years. I was so excited for our plans at Christmas! But God had other plans. I hope and pray you are restored and riding your bike in the heavens. I love you beyond measure daddy. Forever your biggest fan, your loving daughter, Lisa.

I have know Robert for the past 17 years. I would only see him every six months when he came in for his dental cleanings. I enjoyed hearing about his love for biking and all about some of his rides. Robert was such a nice guy and I will miss seeing him. Your "final ride" is the best ride. I'm sure God welcomed you and bike with open arms that you may now enjoy all your days. To all the family, may God give you a peace in the days to come that can only come from him. Prayers for all.

Sorry for your loss. Our loss too. Road with Bob and other Gyros on Wednesday mornings on the Neuse River trail. Always looked forward to the banter he had with others or stories of travels.

A few years back Bob invited me to join him one of his multiple excursions on the GAP trail. He knew all the best places in towns along the way to eat, rest, and sightsee, and I thoroughly enjoyed teaming up with Bob for a great cycling adventure. So glad to have had the opportunity to travel those miles with TallBob.
May his family know peace in due time. With sincere sympathy, Joe Halloran
