Robert A. Shapiro "Bob" of Chevy Chase, MD passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 13 after a six-month fight against a sneaky, rare and virulent cancer.Bob was a beloved, devoted husband of 43 years to Elise Friedman Shapiro; proud father of Brian (Cat Shively) and "grand-kitty" Sabbath, of Chicago, IL and loving brother of Penny Sures (Marty) of Las Vegas, NV.Bob's mother, Edith Shalin Shapiro, lived a long and happy life for 97 years and his father, Milton Israel Shapiro, made it to 89 years, including almost 60 with his beloved wife. So it was only natural that Bob wondered why his own life was destined to end so soon...as it turned out, just a few days before his 76th birthday on November 16, 2021.A proud native of Washington, DC and graduate of Coolidge High School, Bob earned a degree from the University of Maryland in 1967. He later left Georgetown Law School after one year to serve as a Vista volunteer in California's San Joaquin Valley, working closely with farmworkers on housing issues. After four years there, he returned to Washington for a career in commercial and residential real estate management, followed by a 25-year "retirement" job as assistant manager and finance director for the Village of Friendship Heights, MD.In both his personal and professional life, Bob lived with integrity and respect for others. His quick wit and dry sense of humor were his trademark, helping him endure even the most difficult days.A life-long avid reader, Bob was determined to finish the last book he was reading. He was not obsessed with material possessions, but the things he did hold on to had great meaning for him. He valued his friendships of many years and family always took priority. Those who knew and worked with Bob marveled at his ability to analyze and resolve issues efficiently and effectively. For these and so many other reasons, he will be greatly missed by all his co-workers, close friends and family.Arrangements are private, but a celebration of life will be held at a future date.
