Robert Sherrill Obituary

Robert (Bob) H. Sherrill, 80, passed away peacefully at his home on March 26, 2022, following a short battle with cancer. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia on November 14, 1941, the only son of Homer and Nancy E. (Galloway) Sherrill. Homer, a mariner with the U.S. Navy, was lost to enemy action aboard the USS Pringle off Okinawa when Bob was only four years old. Following the loss of his father, Bob spent his childhood days in Mt. Sterling, Illinois, and later grew up in Pasadena, California. He attended local schools and graduated from Pasadena City College before earning his economics degree from the University of California, Riverside. For many years, Bob worked as a certified public accountant and eventually started his own practice where he greeted all clients with a beaming smile and meaningful advice. It was a career he truly loved. Bob formed many friendships through work, hiking, playing tennis, and dining out. He was an excellent conversationalist, and although he had a particular affinity for finance, political affairs, and military history, there were no topics that were off-limits. Having lost his eyesight many years ago, he was not one for cooking or hosting get-togethers; but rather hosted his guests at local eateries throughout his home city of Tustin, California. He enjoyed time spent with friends a great deal. He also enjoyed being outdoors, always sure to have the birdfeeder full and plenty of water for all creatures (great or small) that may cross his yard. He leaves behind his furry feline companion, Puddy, who he loved dearly. He also leaves behind the family that he made, a family of friends, who will miss him more than words could say. Among them are Peggy Anton; Richard and Pat Davis and their three children who grew up on words of wisdom from Uncle Bob (Matthew, Gregory, and Anna); Ed and Diana Van Ness and their two children (Lynn and Nicole); Les and Carroll Phillips; Haywood Gammon; Kathleen and Gordon Smith; Lisa Murphy; Mary, Joan and Jane Ishibashi; and many, many more. Bob is survived by his half-sister, Phyllis N. (Galloway) White, whom he met late in life. Stories and praise for Bob: Peggy - Bob was a great mentor that later became a fantastic friend. I am forever grateful that our paths crossed. Every question I ever asked was answered and every self-doubt I had was reshaped by his encouragement and kindness. He was sometimes quirky but always true & genuine! A rare find indeed. When I decide to grow up, I want to be like Bob! Richard - I met Bob in German class when we were freshmen at PCC, and together we transferred to UCR. Neither of us were particularly cool but we plodded along and, in the process, forged a great and enduring friendship. Little did either of us realize that we would be best friends for over 60 years. Bob will be deeply missed by me, and the entire Davis family. Kathleen - I met Bob in 1986 playing volleyball at Hart Park in Orange. From the beginning, Bob and I connected very well and we became quick friends. I am a very fortunate person to have met Bob. There was no end to his kind, caring, generous soul. I have nothing but awesome memories and I feel like I'm the luckiest person in the world to have met such a great man who became a great friend. Cheers to the unique, incredible, and irreplaceable, Bob!
