Redding, CA

Robert Charles Snider, 92, passed away peacefully among family and friends at Mercy Hospital on September 6, 2016.

Bob was born in the small town of Clearwater, Nebraska on May 10, 1924. The eldest of five children, Bob cared deeply about family. In his early years, he played a central role as a steadfast patriarch and role model among his siblings. Bob was known to do any task that his family needed of him, supporting his mother Etta in caring for the animals and managing their farm.

At 19, Bob enrolled in the US Naval Service to serve during World War II. Upon achieving honorable discharge from his military service, he then spent several years traveling between his hometown of Nebraska, continuing to tend to his family's farm, and California, where his mother and siblings had moved in order to care for his grandmother's broken leg. During this time, Bob graduated from college and attained his teaching degree.

Bob knew his devoted wife Viola Mae Bauer (Vi) from his time growing up in Clearwater. The couple married at the ages of 25 and 21, respectively, embarking on a rich and rewarding life together. Blessed with 10 children, 31 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren, Bob and Vi enjoyed a loving marriage, recently celebrating their 67th wedding anniversary.

In 1952, Bob and Vi moved to California in search of job opportunities and better health. Bob was soon hired for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services, where he worked until 1968, and then later moved his family to Northern California to work for the Shasta County Welfare Department. Bob ultimately advanced to Assistant Director of the Welfare Department, where he worked until retirement and proved once again his incredible work ethic.

In addition to his dedication to family and work, Bob was always characterized by his unwavering generosity. Shortly after his marriage to Vi, Bob welcomed his brother-in-law, Sebastian Anthony Bauer (Sab) into his home. Sab suffered from cerebral palsy, and his own siblings were not able to care for him. Bob embraced Sab into his life and welcomed him to live in his family's home, serving as just another example of his loyalty to family and commitment to those around him. Bob also regularly supported his community, as evidenced by his long career as a social worker, and his regular interactions welcoming those in need of work to complete projects at his property in Redding, California.

A man of faith and adventure, Bob demonstrated strong love and commitment to his family, to God, and to the Catholic Church throughout his entire life. In their later years, Bob and Vi enjoyed frequent travel, taking trips across many continents. They also loved to explore and camp throughout their home state of California.

Bob is preceded in death by his daughter Janet and grandson John. He is survived by his wife Vi, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and their families.

Arrangements have been made to celebrate Bob's life with a viewing at 6 PM and a rosary at 7 PM this Sunday, September 11 at the Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel in Redding. A funeral mass will be held at 10 AM this Monday, September 12 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church.
