Robert Soto Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 7, 2018.
Born in Inglewood California, Bob was the fifth child of six (Joseph, Gloria, Bill, MaryLou, Gil). His parents Joe and Rebecca came to California for a better life. Bob s father died when he was young leaving his older siblings and mother to guide him through to adulthood. Bob was always the focused child which his sister Gloria noticed and signed him up for Accordion lessons. One little-known fact ...as a young child, Bobby Soto played a solo Accordion act on the Lawrence Welk show!

As a teenager, Bob worked at Kirby s Grocery Store (Inglewood Ca) where he met Robert Muller who invited him to come home with him to play cards with his two sisters (Judy and Mary). Soon Mary and Bob fell in love and started their adventures. Bob and Mary raised 4 kids (Mike, Pamela, Carren, Kathleen). His approach to parenting was the same as his CEO roles, be prepared, responsible and don t take yourself so seriously. No matter what crazy situations or events that his children got him into, he showed up and was a great sport.

While working full time and raising 4 kids, Bob graduated with an engineering degree as well as an MBA from UCLA. He also attended USC in pursuit of a Phd but ultimately was recruited into the workforce where his many skills were immediately put to use.

During his career, he played instrumental roles in the growing space program with Hughes Air/Industries and was also one of the pioneers that created what is now Silicon Valley. Bob s executive career spanned many years where he was known as the turn around guy and a mentor to many.

Bob had many interests ...his work, his family, his friends. He loved to tell tales of the past along with budding stories of Silicon Valley. He knew many of the valleys founders and had many stories to go with them! Through his work, Bob traveled the world and met many who called him friend. Bob Soto was a hard-working focused man with exceptional loyalty to friends and family.

Bob is survived by his sister Marylou Messmer, his brother Gil Soto, his Sister in-law Judy Garvey, his Brother in-law Robert Muller (Pat Muller), his children Mike Soto (Judy Soto), Pamela Baker (Gene Baker), Carren Studulski (Steve Studulski), Kathleen Soto (Kevin Kerins) and his grandchildren: Alisabeth, Thomas, Michael, Samantha, Ryan, Aidan and Connor. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends.

Bob s strength of character and loving heart will live on in those that loved him.

There are many people around the world who loved Bob. A private family mass will be said in Bob s honor, We are ask those who knew and loved Bob take a moment to honor him in their own private way whether it be in thought, prayer, a good deed or just a good old toast with a mai tai.

Since we first immigrated to the US over 20 years ago and settled into Almaden Valley, we became very close friends with the Baker family. Bob will be remembered from those early days until we recently met with him again in hospital as the great Patriarch of the extended Soto family, a mentor to all friends and family, a Giant of the tech industry... and simply as a good human being! Bob always had a good story to share with us and ensured that we had a good laugh.

Bob will be sadly missed by all of us... our hearts, prayers and thoughts are with the entire family. To our dear friends Pamela, Gene, Thomas and Samantha.... I am sure that your father and grandfather will cherish very fond memories of your love, support and friendship.

Although I didn't see Bob often, he consulted with my company in the late 1990s and we did spend time together as we looked to form a business partnership around 2006 or 2007. I stayed in touch with Bob for several years but lost touch the last few. Periodically we would get together for lunch or at one of the Silicon Valley Prayer Breakfasts I led.

Bob was a good friend and a remarkable person.

He was a man of integrity and high character. I loved Bob -- his frankness, his determination, his caring for people, and his warmth. He and I had many far-reaching discussions about business, philosophy, and faith. Bob was an effective leader -- strong when he had to be but also compassionate. He certainly will be missed. May God Bless you as you mourn his loss.

Bob was a wonderful person and a delight to chat with. I have many happy memories of visits to the Baker home and engaging in animated conversation with Bob. He will be sorely missed. My heartfelt condolences to all of his family.
Kind regards

I met Bob as part of group of tech execs. I could always count on Bob to say the one thing I needed.

A significant example of that was when I was looking for my next gig and I was mulling the idea of starting a service company (I was tired of product companies and particularly, I was tired of courting VCs).

Instead of doing what I needed to do, I printed out a few cards that positioned me as a "consultant" to help people start companies.

I handed one of the cards to Bob in one of our meetings and he looked at it. Then he looked at me, with a smirk on his face. Then he looked at the card again and said something like, "So, are you going to give yourself advice on how to start your next company? Did you need to print cards for that?"

I was initially very pissed off. And then embarrassed. And then I thanked him.
The very next week I filed the incorporation papers.

Eleven years later my partner and the company got acquired for a substantial amount. A lot of people put a lot of effort to make that happen, but I've always thanked Bob for kicking me in the rear to take the first step.

I always enjoyed time with Bob and Mary. I know they are happy little clams now, so proud of their Family and Friends, and their life together. May Your Memories Be Healing. I have enjoyed the pictures.❤

Pop Soto was an awesome guy and will be missed by all, wish we could have spent more time together, that's what's bad about living so far away, missing family and friends. We were not biological family but The Sotos are family to us. Love you Pop Soto, kiss Mom Soto for me
