Robert Staab Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 8, 2025.
Robert ("Bob") V. Staab passed away on July 7, 2025, at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart, FL. He was 98 years old. Bob was born on May 15, 1927, in North Hempstead, NY. He was the third child of Edward and Natalie Staab, and grew up in Westbury, NY with his three brothers, Edward, John, and Alfred Staab. At Westbury High School, Bob played football and was on the track team. From an early age, Bob learned the importance of service to his community from his father, which he undoubtedly emulated throughout his life.

During World War II, he entered the army (August 1945) and served time in Germany before being honorably discharged in February 1947. After the war, Bob and his brothers began working at their father's hardware store (Staab's Hardware) in Westbury, NY, and eventually he took over the family business, resulting in a 36-year career. On October 2, 1949, he married Loretta Quigg whom he first met in the fourth grade and called the love of his life. Bob built the couple's first home in Westbury, NY and they moved in a month after getting married.

After Bob and Loretta had their first two children (Debbie and Bob Jr.), they moved to another home built by Bob in Huntington, NY. Twelve years later, the family moved (now with seven children) to the Bay Hills area of Huntington. Bob and his family thoroughly enjoyed living so close to water and participating in many community events, such as swim meets, tennis, softball, square dancing, and movie nights. Bob also hosted an annual clam bake, which always included lobster, his favorite food. During their time on Long Island, Bob and Loretta were devoted Catholics and actively involved in Marriage Encounter and Pre-Cana, counseling married couples and soon-to-be newlyweds on all aspects of marriage. Prior to their retirement, the couple moved to a house in East Northport, which Bob renovated with his sons.

In 1986, Bob and Loretta retired to Port St. Lucie, FL and purchased one of the first homes in the Savanna Club. Bob soon became an active member of the community and was one of the first directors of the homeowners' association. Shortly thereafter, Bob was instrumental in the installation of the "Welcome Home" sign at the entrance of the community and started an annual tradition of building and installing (along with friends) holiday decorations at the Fairways Clubhouse. Bob also loved to cook, and beginning in the late 1980s, Bob volunteered to prepare the food for large community meals celebrating holidays or to raise money for different causes, including the Savanna Club's annual Father's Day prime rib dinner and St. Patrick Day's corned beef and cabbage dinner where Bob frequently offered up Loretta's famous Irish soda bread (a family recipe). For almost twenty years, Bob organized and cooked the main entrée for the Savanna Club's monthly potlucks. He used all extra monies raised by those potlucks to fund and build the Savanna Club's VHS and later DVD library, which offered over 3,000 free movies to residents. Bob also organized and ran the community craft show for many years.

Not only was Bob an active volunteer in service of his community, but he was a beloved member. He and Loretta hosted and played pinochle with community members twice a week. An avid wood carver himself, Bob enjoyed getting together with other wood carvers once a week for over 30 years. He also played softball and tennis, was a member of the bowling league, and participated in Savanna Club theater productions. And for over twenty years, he organized the annual Savana Club bus trip to see Bob's beloved Miami Dolphins. But perhaps one of Bob's proudest achievements was that he donated over 130 pints of blood during his lifetime, often crediting his health and long life to those donations.

Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Loretta M. Staab (2011), his son, Michael Staab (1982), and his daughter, Debbie Staab (2024). He is survived by his five children: son, Robert Staab Jr. of Port St. Lucie; daughter, Kathleen Staab of Marblehead, MA; daughter, Amy Fischer of Port St. Lucie; son, James Staab (Renee) of Warrensburg, MO; and son, Thomas Staab (Brenda) of Virginia Beach, VA. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren: Erin Staab (Amy Feinman), Megan Staab, Sarah Staab, Taittyn Fischer, Ashley Staab, Oliver Staab, and Nicholas Staab, as well as one great grandchild, Lena Feinman. The family is currently in the process of planning a celebration of Bob's life. Final details will be posted at the below Legacy.com webpage. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider donating to Treasure Coast Hospice (link below) which gave both Bob and his late wife Loretta wonderful end-of-life care. https://www.treasurehealth.org/292/Donate.

The Man, the Myth, the Legend (AKA Dad),
Your life here on earth has come to an end. What a great life Dad. 98 years of extremely good health, happiness with family and friends and community service. You should be so proud of the life that you led and the example you provided to me and so many others. I will always miss you. You were one of my heroes in life. It has always been such a pleasure to tell people that you and Mom were my parents. GOD bless you both.

I have so many good memories with you Dad. You were always there for me and my siblings. You always provided for us. Taught us what hard work was all about. Showed us how to be part of something bigger than ourselves. You led by example, and I will always be grateful for that.

During my youth you always had time to take me to so many practices and games (football, baseball and lacrosse). I could always hear you loud and clear on the sidelines. You were always in my corner. One game stands out to me the most. It symbolizes how you were always there for me. It was a freshman football game at Finley JHS. I was playing outside linebacker. I jumped a pass route and picked off the ball and ran down the sidelines for a touchdown. The coach called me over and said good job Staab. He then told me there was only one guy out there that could have caught me. He said, it was your old man. He was running just as fast down that sideline as you were. You were always right there with me Dad. Thank you.

Later in my adult life we were always far away in distance, but we remained so close. You became one of my best friends in life. Brenda, Megan, Sarah and I drove I95 from Virginia down to Florida countless times. We always had so much fun. Mom and you poured your love into my family. We took trips to the Orlando attractions together. We played tennis and swam at the pool amongst other activities. My kids will always remember the "egg fights" on easter. Then there were the Miami Dolphin football games. Year after year we always had so much hope, lol. We got to a lot of games in Miami. Our battle cry was "why not us". I hope you have much more influence on the results on the field from above than we had here on earth, lol. What I will miss so much is our traditional phone call after every game. Win, lose or draw, I would call you after every game. Sometimes joy, sometimes sadness but we were always too dumb to quit on our Phins, lol. I am definitely going to miss those phone calls.

I do take comfort in knowing that you are now with our LORD. Reunited with Mom, Debbie and Michael. You are also reunited with your three brothers and their spouses. You are one of the last of the "greatest generation". Thank you for your service to your nation, Dad. I will always remember our great visit to the National World War II Memorial in DC. I was very proud to wheel you around Washington DC for a couple of days a few years back.

To anyone, if you would like to honor my dad please donate blood regularly. He did over 130 pints in his adult life. He was very proud of that. He should have been a spokesperson for the American Red Cross. Also be kind to one another, live your life, don´t have regrets. Give back to your communities. That would put a smile on my dad´s face. GOD bless you, Dad. Rest in peace. You lived a great life. You gave so much to your family, friends and community. Until we meet again................ Go Phins (Why not us).

With love
Tom, Brenda, Megan and Sarah

Dear Dad,

You had a remarkable life. You lived 98 years and accomplished many things. You served in the Army during World War II and soon thereafter married Mom, resulting in a marriage that would last 62 years. You had seven kids, seven grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. You were in the hardware business for 36 years, ultimately owning the business yourself. You and Mom had a wonderful and impactful retirement in the Savanna Club (Port St. Lucie, FL) starting in 1986.

I am very thankful that you and Mom supported my college education. Do you remember the trip we took to Virginia to look at colleges? My decision to pursue a college education (then law school and graduate school) was a transformative experience in my life. I am very grateful to you and Mom for that support.

I was glad I was able to visit you in Florida the week before you passed. It was just nice to reminisce and spend time together. It was also wonderful that you were able to participate in Debbie's celebration of life on June 15, 2025. I know that meant a lot to you!

I could say much more, but you should be very proud of all your accomplishments and the rich and enjoyable life you led. Rest in peace, Dad!

Jim, Renee, and family
