Robert Vincent Staab

Robert ("Bob") V. Staab passed away on July 7, 2025, at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart, FL. He was 98 years old. Bob was born on May 15, 1927, in North Hempstead, NY. He was the third child of Edward and Natalie Staab, and grew up in Westbury, NY with his three brothers, Edward, John, and Alfred Staab. At Westbury High School, Bob played football and was on the track team. From an early age, Bob learned the importance of service to his community from his father, which he undoubtedly emulated throughout his life.

During World War II, he entered the army (August 1945) and served time in Germany before being honorably discharged in February 1947. After the war, Bob and his brothers began working at their father's hardware store (Staab's Hardware) in Westbury, NY, and eventually he took over the family business, resulting in a 36-year career. On October 2, 1949, he married Loretta Quigg whom he first met in the fourth grade and called the love of his life. Bob built the couple's first home in Westbury, NY and they moved in a month after getting married.

After Bob and Loretta had their first two children (Debbie and Bob Jr.), they moved to another home built by Bob in Huntington, NY. Twelve years later, the family moved (now with seven children) to the Bay Hills area of Huntington. Bob and his family thoroughly enjoyed living so close to water and participating in many community events, such as swim meets, tennis, softball, square dancing, and movie nights. Bob also hosted an annual clam bake, which always included lobster, his favorite food. During their time on Long Island, Bob and Loretta were devoted Catholics and actively involved in Marriage Encounter and Pre-Cana, counseling married couples and soon-to-be newlyweds on all aspects of marriage. Prior to their retirement, the couple moved to a house in East Northport, which Bob renovated with his sons.



In 1986, Bob and Loretta retired to Port St. Lucie, FL and purchased one of the first homes in the Savanna Club. Bob soon became an active member of the community and was one of the first directors of the homeowners' association. Shortly thereafter, Bob was instrumental in the installation of the "Welcome Home" sign at the entrance of the community and started an annual tradition of building and installing (along with friends) holiday decorations at the Fairways Clubhouse. Bob also loved to cook, and beginning in the late 1980s, Bob volunteered to prepare the food for large community meals celebrating holidays or to raise money for different causes, including the Savanna Club's annual Father's Day prime rib dinner and St. Patrick Day's corned beef and cabbage dinner where Bob frequently offered up Loretta's famous Irish soda bread (a family recipe). For almost twenty years, Bob organized and cooked the main entrée for the Savanna Club's monthly potlucks. He used all extra monies raised by those potlucks to fund and build the Savanna Club's VHS and later DVD library, which offered over 3,000 free movies to residents. Bob also organized and ran the community craft show for many years.

Not only was Bob an active volunteer in service of his community, but he was a beloved member. He and Loretta hosted and played pinochle with community members twice a week. An avid wood carver himself, Bob enjoyed getting together with other wood carvers once a week for over 30 years. He also played softball and tennis, was a member of the bowling league, and participated in Savanna Club theater productions. And for over twenty years, he organized the annual Savana Club bus trip to see Bob's beloved Miami Dolphins. But perhaps one of Bob's proudest achievements was that he donated over 130 pints of blood during his lifetime, often crediting his health and long life to those donations.

Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Loretta M. Staab (2011), his son, Michael Staab (1982), and his daughter, Debbie Staab (2024). He is survived by his five children: son, Robert Staab Jr. of Port St. Lucie; daughter, Kathleen Staab of Marblehead, MA; daughter, Amy Fischer of Port St. Lucie; son, James Staab (Renee) of Warrensburg, MO; and son, Thomas Staab (Brenda) of Virginia Beach, VA. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren: Erin Staab (Amy Feinman), Megan Staab, Sarah Staab, Taittyn Fischer, Ashley Staab, Oliver Staab, and Nicholas Staab, as well as one great grandchild, Lena Feinman.
