Robert Urich Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 16, 2002.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Robert Urich, an Emmy-winning actor best known for his starring roles in “Soap” and “Spenser: For Hire,” has died after battling cancer. He was 55.

Urich died Tuesday morning at a hospital in Thousand Oaks surrounded by family members and friends, publicist Cindy Guagenti said.

Urich announced in 1996 that he was suffering from synovial cell sarcoma, a rare cancer that attacks the body's joints. The cancer went into remission after he underwent chemotherapy, radiation treatments and two operations.

Urich earned his first television role in the 1973 comedy series “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice.” He also appeared in the TV series “S.W.A.T” before being cast as Peter Campbell in “Soap.”

One of Urich's most recognizable roles came as private detective Dan Tanna in “Vega$.” He later starred in another detective series “Spenser: For Hire,” which was based on Robert Parker's novels.

More recently, Urich appeared in “The Lazarus Man,” and the brief NBC sitcom “Emeril.”

Born in Toronto, Ohio, Urich won a football scholarship at Florida State University. He later earned a master's degree in broadcast research and management from Michigan State University.

Urich briefly worked in Chicago as a radio sales agent and a television meteorologist. Burt Reynolds helped Urich land his first major role, co-starring as his younger brother in a stage production of “The Rainmaker.”

Urich appeared in several television miniseries and cable specials. He won an Emmy for his narration of the cable documentary “U-Boats: Terror on Our Shores.” He also won a Cable ACE award as host of the National Geographic series “On Assignment.”

Urich spent his latter years devoted to cancer research and education. He and his wife, Heather Menzies, established the Heather and Robert Urich Fund for Sarcoma Research at the University of Michigan to accelerate the pace of research into sarcoma.

He is survived by his wife; three children, Allison, Ryan and Emily; two brothers; a sister; and his mother.

A memorial service is scheduled for Friday in Los Angeles.

My husband and I loved Robert Urich in Spenser for Hire. We watched the shows in the 80's when we first started taking trips to Nova Scotia from MA. It was our favorite show. So sorry he has passed, but glad he is not suffering anymore. He was great as were Susan and Hawk! Thank you.

Rest in peace Robert Ulrich. I also did not know of his passing away from cancer 20 years ago. I just took for granted that he retired. Thank you so much for all that you did while you were with us. I really enjoyed Vega$, it was my favorite of his shows. You are missed. Rest in peace and my prayers for all of his family and friends as well.

I just looked up Robert Zurich, because I wondered what happened to him and what was he doing after Spenser: For Hire. I was surprised to learn of his passing over 20 years ago. I loved both Vega$ and Spenser: For Hire. I always thought he was so handsome. Rest easy, Mr. Urich

Mr Urich, when I was a young man growing up in the UK, around 1990 the BBC acquired an American detective show which they showed late at night during the week. That show was Spenser For Hire, and from that point you become one of my favourite actors. That show stayed with me over the years and so did you as an actor. My father was also a fan and I remember him telling me of your passing. To this day I find it sad and unfair that you are no longer with us, you would only be 75 now, so you were taken way before your time. Rest in peace sir, you were and are a legend.

I met you in 1980 while you were filming an episode at the Little Church of the West in the Hacienda parking lot. I watched the filming all day. I was 19 years old.
Later that same year one of your crew members brought the T-Bird to mine and my dads shop for an electrical problem. It was a bad regulator. Ever since that day I have wanted a 1957 Red Ford Thunderbird. This year 2020 I finally have it. Rest In Peace Robert.

“Life is eternal and love is immortal. Death is only a horizon and an horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight.” From all I’ve read you were an approachable, kind man. That came through in your work. You left us far, far too soon. Now you and your beloved Heather are together for all eternity. May you both know the fullness of God’s love.

My sister died from synovial cell sarcoma. She had a toe removed in 1974 before they realized that it would just come right back. She died in 1979 leaving two young boys. I helped raise her two boys and have missed her every day she has been gone.
I am sorry for your loss and pray they have found better treatment for this cancer!

Always will be my favorite all time actor. My heart hurts when I watch the Spenser DVD series once a week, but it is worth it to enjoy his screen presence. My best wishes for his wonderful family. They lived in my home town, Andover, MA, for a time, of which I'll always be very proud.

Every so often someone posts a memory of Robert here and I often think of the family resemblance but with the passing of Charmain Carr we who loved the Sound of Music remember our love for all of you. My grandparents were Austrian and Grandpa Breckner's sister made the trip by wagon back into Salzburg when the Russians came into her city of Beszterce. My grandfather was here in America by 1907 but his sister remained in what is now the Transylvanian section of Romania. Lived out her life in Germany after fleeing where my aunt visited her in the 60s and 70s. God bless your lovely family.

For Robert...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

i can't believe it is coming up on 6 years. i loved watching him..his smile, the twinkle in his eyes. it was easy to see he was a "real" person, genuine and true. i have never heard a single bad word spoken about him, or gossip, or any of the tabloid nonsense. he really had his proirities straight and kept his name protected. that is a rarity today, even for the "non-hollywood" crowd. my parents met him while filming "vegas" and got his autograph for me, as they knew i just ADORED him. i cherish it, even to this day. they said he was a real gentleman about signing and didn't act as if it were an imposition at all. that didn't surprise me...you can tell, under his success, he was humble...and human. the entertainment business lost a great actor, but humanity lost a great person...the world would be a better place with more people like him. i hope he is resting peacefully. i hope his family has found some solace.

I was shocked when Robert passed away. I was shocked again few months later when his mother died. I and Robert was from the same home town. I only met him once, but always met and talked with his mother, and few times with brother and sister. Robert is only 1 of a handfull of Hollywood people that did not get hung up with the Hollywood scene. Robert and his wife ( from sound of music, lost in space, etc ) gave more than they received. There is still a yearly high school award given in his name ( He used to come back to grant the award ).
Most memoriable moment is when he return home with his convertible card from vegas, and the big RV with his co-star, and ofcourse staff. Also when his mother would compliment my daughter how beautiful she was. My daughter was too young to remember. Missed but not forgotton. Top of the class actor, husband, father, and son.

Speaking for his many fans we still miss Robert and can't believe he isn't with us anymore. It is funny that I would learn more about him after death and felt like he was family. Matter of fact I always thought he looked like my cousin who's brother was actually discovered by Burt and went to Hollywood too since he was a Miami football player and caught his attention bouncing at a Miami bar. Marrying someone from the Sound of Music gave us even more to love him for since we were such fans of the movie as well. We are praying that the foundation is doing well and we will look forward to hearing more from his lovely family.

Mr. Urich deserves this lovely tribute from fans who have been touched by his life. I was a loyal fan of "Spenser For Hire" for years. No other show can ever hope to bring the depth to acting the eay that show did. Mr. Urich's heart and soul came through his character. He was an amazing actor, but more than that, an amazing person. We have lost a brave, good soul but are the better for his life lived with honesty, conviction, and courage. Bravo, Spenser!
