Rocco MARTINO Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 4 to Jul. 8, 2020.
DR. ROCCO LEONARD (ROCKY) MARTINO June 25, 1929 - June 29, 2020 It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Rocky, at 91, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He is survived by his dearly beloved wife of 58 years, Barbara I. (nee D'Iorio) Martino. Rocky was the loving father of Peter, Joseph, Paul, (Teresa), and John, (Susann). Dear grandfather of 13 and great-grandfather of two. Loved son of the late Domenico and Josephine (nee Di Giulio) Martino, and dear brother of the late Dr. Jiacomo J. (Jack) Martino, and surviving sister-in-law, Betty. Much loved uncle of JoAnne (nee Martino) Gallagher (Jim), and family. Rocky is survived by many of his Canadian Di Giulio and Martino cousins, including Donna (Mencarelli) Turnbull and Joanne (Mencarelli) Bailey. Rocky was born and raised in Toronto and attended De La Salle College 'Oaklands'. He moved on to The University of Toronto, where he earned his BS in Physics, his MSc in Astrophysics and his Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering from The Institute of Aerospace Studies. Dr. Martino was a world-renowned inventor, author and technology industry pioneer, who was at the forefront of many of the computer and information applications that have made our information age possible. In addition, he was a completely devoted family man and a worldwide leader in Catholic Church philanthropy. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations in Dr. Martino's memory be made, in support of Catholic education, to The Rocco and Barbara Martino Foundation, c/o Stradley, Ronan, Stevens & Young, Attn.: Michele Lubus, 2005 Market St., Ste. 2600, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Our deepest condolences to Barbara, Peter, Joseph, Paul, John and their families. Rocky was more than an inventor, author and scientist, he was a man of honour. Rocky always showed love to all of us and had a deep connection to my mother, the late Maria (Martino) Mencarelli. Rockys compassion, laughter and spirit will be sadly missed by his Canadian cousins, Joanne Bailey, Angela & Michael Del Borrello (sons Anthony & Thomas) and Paula & Trevor McCague (sons Brodie, Rocco, Dante & Nico). We will always carry your memory in our hearts.

Blessed to be a part in Dr. Martino derniers jours. His departure has left an empty space around for those who knew him. His investment in others, and in God field has proven how the Lord used his talents which been demonstrated in his art works. Twenty -three hours before his last breathe (On Sunday at at 5:28 a.m) he stated: Tomorrow morning when you came to work, Ill be gone. Voilà! He was the man of his words .
Our deepest condolences to Ms . Barbera & the family.

Dr. Martino and his family were our neighbors across the street in Sea Isle City. We lived at 7301 Pleasure Ave., but moved to Florida in 1975. He gave me my first job. I was his handyman for the several rentals he owned. Our families belonged to the previous Yacht Club of Sea Isle City. He was a sweet man, very caring and nurturing. He inspired me to earn a PhD. I hope his family remembers the Davis - White family as fondly as we remember the Martinos. Peace and condolences from St. Petersburg.

Dr. Martino was an extraordinary man with many great accomplishments.

July 4, 2020

I was with Rocky in MP&C at U of T. He was usually at the top of the class, always in maths. He was a great friend.
It is too bad that we don't know what our classmates did after graduating and must find out from a notice. Obviously a very successful history and full life.
I am sorry for your loss.
Regards, Keith Whiteley.

I will Miss you Dr. Rocky Martino. You were a Gentleman and a Scholar. I will miss the theoretical physics discussions, and discussions of future innovative technologies, that were disruptive and challenged the present paradigm.. I will miss the times we corresponded and the talking of life and nature. I know you are still exploring out there, and hope that you continue to spread joy and love where you are now. - Dr. North Larsen
