Roderick Joseph Bauer

Roderick J. Bauer died of natural causes at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, CA on November 9, 2022. He was 94 years old.

Most of his life was devoted to physical fitness and a nutrition regimen that allowed him to remain active and healthy nearly to the very end. His role models included fitness and nutritional guru Jack LaLanne, gym owner "Babe" Stansbury, and bodybuilder Bernie Ernst.

He enlisted in the US Army in September 1950 and saw action in the Korean War. He was awarded the Army of Occupational Medal (Japan), the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and a Combat Infantry Badge.

Rod worked at the Hacienda Hotel in El Segundo. He was one of three co-owners and held the title of Managing Director. He was selected "Citizen of the Month" by the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce and was acclaimed for bringing professional athletes and sports fans to El Segundo. When the hotel was sold in the early '80's, he bought an 8-room motel in Manhattan Beach that he named the Sea View Motel. He was the front desk clerk, the bellman and the maid. Most of his adult life was spent living in Manhattan Beach and he could often be seen sunbathing in front of his motel on Highland Avenue and 34th Street. Many of his friends and acquaintances knew him by his nickname "Blue".

Rod was married to Carleen Inez Boden from 1957 to 1975. During their marriage they had two children, Rod and Tamara. He is survived by his children, his sister Carol Gourley (Ken); his grandson Thomas J. Hodge and a number of nieces and nephews.

There is no memorial service planned as per his wishes.
