Roderick Dunne Obituary

Published by Chicago Tribune on Jan. 22, 2023.
Rory was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 1, 1960. Rory married Laura Shannessy in 1993 and they were blessed with four children: Ensign Griffin F. Dunne, Christian A. Dunne, Lucia M. Dunne, and Greta J. Dunne. Rory was the beloved eldest son of the late Arthur L. Dunne "Moose" (former Chief Judge of the Chancery Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County) and the late Margaret Hinrichs Dunne: dear brother of Patrick (Jami), Megan, Fitz (Jessica) and the late Melissa Dunne. Rory grew up in Winnetka, Illinois. He attended grade school at Faith Hope & Charity, matriculating to high school at Loyola Academy while successfully overcoming cancer and at the same time excelling at football (lineman) and hockey (goalie). Rory then went on Williams College where he majored in Art focusing on sculpture and lithography, continuing his football career for the Purple Cows or the "Ephs" and playing rugby and coaching women's hockey. Rory's summers were spent either in the Northwoods of Wisconsin or Canada, canoeing and leading the campers of Manitowish on lengthy expeditions into the forests and tundra of the Northwest Territories and Hudson Bay. Rory's love of the outdoors was only surpassed by his love of his wife and children. After graduating from Williams, Rory attended Northwestern University School of Law and started his storied law career at Peterson & Ross focusing on complex insurance coverage disputes/litigation. In 2001, Rory joined with his friends and colleagues to form Karbal, Cohen, Economou, Silk & Dunne, a thriving insurance and litigation boutique where his commitment to his clients, his love of the law and devotion to the firm knew no bounds. Being treated for and surviving childhood cancer under the care of Doctor Edward Baum of Children's Memorial Hospital, Rory was a devoted volunteer to "A Special Wish Foundation." He also was a counselor at the "One Step at A Time" program for children with cancer and actively involved in the Young Irish Fellowship Club. On January 19, 2023, Rory peacefully passed surrounded by his family and friends. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 23, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Donnellan Family Funeral Service, 10045 Skokie Boulevard, Skokie, IL 60077. I am so sorry. Rory was amazing. I always thought of him as some sort of crazy mountain man. I was a freshmen at Williams and he was a JA and we formed this friendship because I could drive stick and desperately needed a ride to and from Williams. So many amazing positive memories. I think the best was when we were driving back to Williams in an ice storm and the car slid off the road. We spent the next hour skating up and down the Vermont hills until we were rescued by a snow plow. I will miss you, my friend.

I am so sorry for the loss of Rory to this world. He was a wonderful human who had such a positive impact in my life at Williams, though I was a year behind him. He was my coach for ice hockey -- and was wonderfully patient & supportive as my skating skills slowly caught up with my stick skills (honed by playing field hockey and lacrosse). He made me a giant wooden cudgel to reward me for being the team goon my first year. His advice, "If you are going down, and we all know you are, take someone with you." We also were both studio art majors, and I was inspired by his daring. I last spoke with him in the spring of 2022 as he was preparing to attend his son's graduation from USNA because I had a son in '18 and lived in Annapolis. We had plans to get together in the future. I am so sad that will not happen on this earth. Sending so much love and light to the family. Rory was a great, great person.

Such sad news. I have fond memories of being in art classes with Rory at Williams. May his artistic talents be put to great use in heaven :)

Our deepest condolences to Rory´s family and friends. We are saddened by the news of his passing. We first met Rory when he coached our youngest son, Peter, in hockey. Rory was quite a sight on the ice in his shorts and orange Army helmet. We admired his enthusiasm and ability to connect with the kids. He certainly loved life and was one-of-a-kind. May Rory´s family be comforted by the many expressions of sympathy that they received and by the many happy memories they have of him. Mary and Ted Machnik and family.
