Rodney Skoglund Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 1, 2018.
Rodney Dan Skoglund, MD

1940 ~ 2018

Rod Skoglund, born January 6, 1940, passed away the morning of June 24, 2018 from complications related to metastasized ocular melanoma and its treatment. He was married to Janice Montgomery Skoglund for 50 years until her passing in May of 2014. He is survived by his children, Paul Skoglund (wife Liz) of Bellevue, WA, Susie Young (husband Brian and daughters, Abbie and Zoe) of Portland, OR, and Scott Skoglund (wife Allison) of Seattle, WA; as well as by his brother Albert Skoglund (wife Ann) of Walla Walla, WA, and sister Donna Koziol (husband John) of Bend, OR.

Rod was born in Spokane, WA to Edna and Sydney Skoglund. His family moved to Silver Spring, MD, when he was 12 years old. Rod attended Montgomery Blair High School (at the same time as Janice), competed in cross country and track at the state level, and graduated in 1958. While attending the University of Maryland he started dating Janice. They were married on June 26, 1963 while he was attending Johns Hopkins Medical School. After earning his medical degree at Hopkins in 1966 and completing an internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt in 1970, he served with the U.S. Public Health Service in Seattle where he completed a fellowship in endocrinology at University of Washington in 1973. The family then settled in Normandy Park, WA where he worked in private practice for over 45 years. During his career, he also served at various times as an attending physician with the Seattle Veterans Administration, as a clinical professor at University of Washington, the medical director for Highline Medic One, and the chief of staff for Highline Community Hospital.

He enjoyed backpacking, fishing, storytelling, and yard work. The family thanks all the friends and relatives who have been so thoughtful and helpful. In lieu of flowers, please give to a charity of your choice, be kind to your neighbors, pick up some litter, and pull some weeds.

At Rod's wish, there will be no memorial service.

A celebration of Rod's life will be

held on August 19, from 1:00pm to 5pm, at the Normandy Park Community Club (The Cove), 1500 SW Shorebrook Drive, Normandy Park, WA

All are welcome.

When I was in search of a new Primary Care Physician I was told by many people (including my new PCP) that I was not going to find another Dr. Skoglund - that he was the best and he was the one the other doctors went to. I still miss him greatly.

I am sorry for your loss. It is always hard to lose a loved one in death. Our heavenly Father is very aware and understands the pain you feel. He will give you comfort. (Psalms 86:6,7) Your family has my deepest sympathy.

Dr. Skoglund served three generations of my family. He became the doctor of my mother and father shortly after he completed medical school and set up practice at three tree medical. A few years later I completed college, and then he became my doctor as well until I moved out of state. And bless his heart, even though he was no longer accepting new patients, he agreed to take on my son just a year ago when my son moved to Burien.
We will always remember him for his intelligence, his caring, and this quiet sense of humor. I am truly sad to hear of his passing.

I want to say that Dr. Skoglund was the best endocrinologist I've ever had. He was such a blessing in my life. He was kind with a wonderful bedside manner and helped me when no others really seemed to care. I was extremely kind to me while under his care and he got me hooked up with an insulin pump in no time. I always enjoyed my time with him and how much time he spent in our appointments. I was so grieved to hear of his passing and my condolences to all of his family. I know you will miss him greatly, he was a wonderful person.

I am so deeply sad to read this .
To all of his family and friends and staff my heartfelt condolences and prayers are with you.
I only saw this incredible Doctor one time , I was sent to him to rule out possible conditions by my primary . And I felt so comfortable there , loved everything about that visit . He was the kindest most amazing Doctor ( and I have had many ) I have ever met . He just had a way with people I guess even just meeting them .
The pup in the Office was a huge bonus ! He even let me take a picture of him and his pup .
I remember leaving wishing he was a primary care Doctor I just loved him .
My tests all came back okay , and I didn't have a reason to go back . But I sure wanted to .
You are with the Lord , you are a good man !

I had only met Dr. Skoglund six weeks prior to his passing. Directed to him in an emergency situation with out of control blood sugars.

With his help we brought them under better control and on my last appointment with him two weeks prior to his passing he said, "Young lady, today you are my Rock Star" From an A1C of 14 to 8.1 in such a short time was not accomplished by just me. He was good at what he did. :-)

He was such a kind and gentle soul, concerned SO much about his patient's health and determined to help them get better. I could see it and sense it in just that very short time in knowing him.

I will ALWAYS remember his acclamation of approval from him that last visit... and will remember him fondly. I am grateful that he came into my life.

My prayer are sent to the family and all his friends for comfort and healing at this most difficult time.

Rest well Dr. Skoglund...

Dr. Skoglund was my doctor for 30 years. I first went to him when I was 20 years old. He knew me my whole adult life and he truly cared for me and me for him. I was so deeply sadden to hear of his passing. He was a great doctor and a great person. His most recent advice he gave me in an appointment was, "everyone needs to get a dog and walk the dog 3 miles everyday". I loved that. I loved that after his wife's passing that he brought their dog to the office. I will miss him so much.

Most sincere sympathies to Dr. Skoglund's family and staff. May God bring you all solace & comfort. It was with much sadness I learned today of his passing. He has been my doctor for nearly 40 years & a caring man & great doctor, worthy of trust. Along with everyone else, I will sorely miss him as well as his little waggly tail greeter! I do not look forward to trying to find someone to fill his shoes.

Being a part of his family from Sweden we feel immense grief this moment on Rodneys tragic pass away.
He was such a nice, kind and thoughtful person, it will not be easy to forget him.
May The Lord grand his soul with rest in peace in heaven and give patience and courage to the rest of family and friends to bear this great loss and sorrow.
