Roger Avery Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 28, 2024.
Roger Edward Avery, 83, of Edmond, Oklahoma, passed away on December 24, 2024, leaving behind a life marked by profound determination, intellect, and contradictions.

Born in Lucien, Oklahoma, on August 24, 1941, Roger's early years were shaped by a sharp mind and a restless spirit that led him to enlist in the US Navy at the age of 17. He served for a decade, including a demanding tour on a submarine during the Vietnam War, an experience that refined his mechanical expertise and deepened his appreciation for engineering and managing complicated systems.

Following his military service, Roger found success in a manufacturing career, where his mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities thrived. He found a creative outlet as an exceptional photographer. Yet, his personal life was marked by significant struggles. Roger contended with emotional and psychological challenges that shaped all of his relationships, often causing deep pain to those closest to him.

Roger leaves behind his devoted wife of 58 years, Ruth, who resides in a memory care facility in Edmond, and his two daughters, Rachel Avery of Chicago, IL, and Rebecca Avery of Santa Monica, CA, who have navigated the complexities of their father's spirit with resilience and grace. His four feline companions, who brought him comfort in his later years, his four surviving siblings, Steve Avery (Covington, OK), Mark Avery (Mesa, AZ), Cindy Avery (Moab, UT), and Lisa Avery (Mesa, AZ), and a large extended family also mourn his passing.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to PAWS Chicago (pawschicago.org), to honor Roger's love of animals.

Roger's intelligence, engineering talents, love of science, Bad Dad Jokes, short temper, loneliness, and sensitive soul leave a nuanced legacy. His passing invites reflection on the impact of mental health, the complexity of human relationships, and the courage needed to seek healing and growth.
