Roger Chouinard

Roger Paul Chouinard, 81, of Topanga Canyon, California passed away at home surrounded by his family on March 24, 2023.

Roger was born on February 18, 1942 to Josephine and Paul Chouinard in Santa Maria, California. Raised in Riverside California, after graduating from Riverside Polytechnic High School, he went on to study at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles.

He co-founded Duck Soup Produckions, Inc. in 1972, where he designed and directed many award-winning television commercials. Roger's body of work also encompassed editorial and book illustrations as well as paintings, sculptures and assemblages. He was inspired by his frequent travels to Japan to participate in a summer arts program for children. His most recent exhibitions in Los Angeles and Tokyo showcased his collage paintings and sculptures.

Fortunately, Roger was able to maintain his creative pursuits up through his last days. He loved to be surrounded by the natural beauty of Topanga Canyon and the Southern California ocean. He loved to search for and collect objects such as seashells and driftwood along the beach. As a teenager, he loved spending summers in Crystal Cove in Newport Beach with his family.

A lifelong reader and lover of books, in the last several years, Roger volunteered for the Friends of Topanga Library bookstore.

Talented and humble, he was kind and accepting. He loved animals; from the birds around his home in Topanga and all of his dogs over the years.

Roger is survived by Mariko Chouinard, his wife of 37 years, daughter Christine (Max) Kilger (with Deanna Chouinard), daughter Nicole (Martin Hiemer) Chouinard and son Paul Chouinard.

No immediate service is planned, however a celebration of his life and art will be held in Los Angeles later this year.
