Roger Daland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 14, 2008.
CENTERVILLE — Roger Allerton Daland died on Aug. 4, 2008, of congestive heart failure. He was born in New York City on March 2, 1926. Roger was the son of the late Dr. Ernest M. Daland and Lois Redmond Daland of Newton Center and (summers) Brewster, where Roger also grew up.

He attended Newton schools, but his high school years were completed at Browne/ Nichols (Buckingham) in Cambridge.

In 1942, at the age of 16, he dropped out of school and joined the Navy. After four years of service in the Pacific arena, on a Navy LST, he returned to graduate. For four additional years he stayed in the inactive reserve. Roger's love of country and patriotism were evident throughout his life.

Because of his interest in cars, his first job was at Clarke and White Motors in Boston as a novice automobile mechanic. Over the years, he advanced to a partnership in a Ford dealership in Sharon. When this terminated, he joined a Cote dealership in Mattapan.

In 1982, he and his wife moved to the Cape. Finally retired, he connected to his fondness of boats by working part-time for Cote Yacht Sales in Harwichport.

Roger was a man of integrity and was kind and generous to family and friends. He loved boating and fishing in Cape Cod Bay.

He is survived by his caring wife, and first mate, Virginia (Ginny) Bowser Daland, of 50 years; his brother, Andrew Daland, pre-deceased him several years ago. Also surviving are his sister, Nancy Daland Smith, of Texas, and her three nieces to Roger, Lois Johnson of Alaska, Deborah Johnson of Wyoming and Rachael of Texas. He also leaves nephews, Bradford S. Daland of New Hampshire, Alan E. Hebb of Maine and Stephen E. Krause of Tennessee. He is also survived by a niece Jacquelin Killam Scharn of New Hampshire.

A memorial is being planned for the fall. If you wish to make a donation in Roger's memory, please consider the Disabled American Veterans, 1030 Falmouth Road, Hyannis, MA 02601.
