ROGER DONLON Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 25 to Jan. 27, 2024.
ROGER HUGH CHARLES DONLON Roger Hugh Charles Donlon, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and Medal of Honor Recipient, lost his 12-year battle with Agent Orange Parkinson's disease and died Thursday, January 25, 2024 Roger was the eighth of 10 children born to Paul A. and Marion (Howard) Donlon of Saugerties, N.Y. Both his parents preceded him in death. In addition to his parents, his sisters, Marion, Mary Bernadette, Adrienne and Barbara (Huff), along with brothers, Joseph, Michael and Gerard also preceded him in death. Two other brothers, Paul A. Jr. of Saugerties, N.Y. and Jack in Panama City, Fla., survive him. Graduating from Saugerties High School in 1952, Roger enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1953. He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point for two years before leaving to achieve his dream of serving as an Infantry Officer through Officer Candidate School. He earned his BA from University of Nebraska at Omaha, MS from Campbell University in North Carolina and had an Honorary Master of Military Arts and Sciences from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan. Roger served for a total of 33 years in his specialties as an Infantry, Special Forces and Foreign Area Officer before retiring in 1988 in Leavenworth. On July 6, 1964, then Captain Donlon and his Special Forces Team A-726, along with 60 Chinese Nungs, defended Camp Nam Dong, Vietnam when they were attacked by a force of 900 enemy troops. It was the first battle of the Vietnam War where the Regular North Vietnamese Army joined forces with the Viet Cong from the south to try to overrun an American Outpost. For his actions at Nam Dong, Roger became the first American Soldier to be awarded the Medal of Honor in Vietnam. In November of 1965 while on a flight to Fort Benning, Ga., Roger sat next to a young widow whose husband had been killed in action in Vietnam. Neither was aware that this was the beginning of a love affair that would last to infinity and beyond. Three years later Roger married Norma Shinno Irving on November 9, 1968. His surviving family are Linda Danninger (Paul) (daughter with his first wife who preceded him in death); his wife of 55 years, Norma; three sons, Damian, Jason (Lori) and Derek. His youngest son, Justin also preceded him in death. In addition, there are six grandchildren, Alicia Robbins, Justine (and Adam Donlon-Jeschke) Griffin Danninger, Elise, Jordan and Aurelia Donlon; and one very special great-granddaughter, Willow Faye Donlon-Campbell; 17 nieces and nephews; 21 grandnieces and -nephews; and five great-grandnieces and -nephews. Roger achieved many awards, honors, and accolades during his lifetime, but he considered his two reconciliation projects in Vietnam as his contribution to "Heal the wounds of war." Both he, and his wife, Norma, believed that "Those who have invested the most of themselves in war should be the first to reach out in peace." Roger Donlon will be remembered as a devoted family man, faithful to God and his church, a patriot to the core and always a friend and mentor to those with whom he came in contact. Visitation beginning with praying the rosary led by Matt Belford will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, January 29, 2024, at R.L. Leintz Funeral Home, 4701 10th Ave., Leavenworth. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 306 North Broadway, Leavenworth. A Celebration of Life will be April 10, 2024, beginning at 1300 hours at Frontier Conference Center, 350 Biddle Avenue, Fort Leavenworth. Burial service to follow at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of cards or flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Gary Sinise Foundation.

Unfortunately I never met Roger, but I'm proud to say my mother was a Donlon. I would have loved to have spoken to him as to our kinship. I'm very proud to be from the Donlon family tree. May he rest in peace.

I knew Roger when we were stationed at Fort Jackson and we saw him again in Alaska at Fort Wainwright. He was a remarkable person and my parents thought the world of Roger. I just heard of his passing and felt a loss of a great man.

In 2008, shortly after returning from Iraq, I had the privilege of meeting Colonel Roger Donlon (USA, Ret.) while assigned to the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center's Headquarters. The purpose of our visit to COL Donlon and his wife Norma's home was to prepare for the upcoming Ft. Leavenworth Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

The Speechwriter and I went with the intent to interview COL Donlon and gather photographs for a slideshow to enhance the ceremony. However, what unfolded during our visit was an unexpected connection. Colonel Donlon, far more interested in our personal stories and backgrounds, revealed a remarkable kindness and genuine personality that left a lasting impression on me.

During the ceremony, where he generously donated his Medal of Honor to the Command and General Staff College, it became apparent that his emotions ran deep. The contrast between 2008 and the original Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House in 1964 highlighted the profound impact the passing years had on him.

What struck me most was COL Donlon's poignant remembrance of his fallen soldiers, MSG Gabriel R. Alamo and SGT John L. Houston, from the battle. Meeting Colonel Roger Donlon and his wife Norma was an honor, and my deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends. His legacy and the sacrifices of his comrades will always be remembered.

Thank you for your great service. You endured a lot during your time in Vietnam and had to have had an angel watching over you to be able to make it out of Vietnam alive. Both you and your men most certainly deserved the Medal of Honor and glad that you received it. SALUTE from a former WAC.

Yoko and I met Roger at a People To People International event many years ago, and we became fast friends over the ensuing years, even though our political loyalties went in opposite directions. WE are both deeply saddened by learning of his passing, but we all know that he is now in a better place, enjoying fellowship with his Savior and Lord, Jesus!! We send our sincere sympathy to Norma, and the rest of the Donlon Family. He was a wonderful human being, a great Patriot, and sincere Christian Gentleman. We shall remember him always -- and Honor that memory!! (Gene & Yoko Mossner, Saginaw, Michigan).

Very sorry to hear of Col. Donlon's passing. His life was an inspiration to many. I had the honor of meeting Roger in 1965, shortly after was awarded the Medal of Honor. He graciously took time to be our guest of honor and speaker at the annual dinner meeting of Boy Scouts of America's Half Moon Lodge, Order of the Arrow, at the Ruby, NY firehouse near Roger's hometown of Saugerties. As lodge chief at that time, I recall then Capt. Donlon spoke humbly yet patriotically to the group of Scouts honored to meet him. Meeting him was a memory I carried with me during my own Army service a couple years later. I still treasure the Saturday Evening Post magazine cover honoring Capt. Donlon's heroism.

I meet Col Donlon at Ft. Benning GA, in 1964 during a presentation he was providing to the US Army Infantry School. I was 10yr old, part of the choir (Faith Elementary School-Ft Benning) that was to perform during a break. Col Donlon, then Captain, came back and introduces himself to all of us. I was an Army brat of a Korean/Vietnam vet and old enough to know who he was!
In 2004 during George Bush´s (43rd POTUS) 2nd Inauguration the FBI was providing a security detail to the MOH Society for those events. I was part of that detail and had a chance again to be re-introduced to this hero. Over the next two years until I retired, the FBI continued to provide a security detail for the MOH Society upon request, and I developed a fond acquaintance with Col Donlon and his wife Norma.
To Colonel Donlon, a true hero of this great nation. Sir, you will be truly missed by all those you have touched.
Eternal rest grant unto you, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon you. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

What a wonderful man and Veteran! As the Director of the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System, my health care team members were able to love and support Mr. Donlon in providing his health care needs over many years. He always was so humble and willing to share his love of the military and his wife. I was privileged to get to know him better in the several conversations we had. We have lost a great Veteran on Earth but Heaven has received a great Man.

Dear Norma and Family,
"And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you." John 16:22

We pray that He will comfort you and provide you with courage and hope and breathe peace into your saddened hearts.
As we shared on the phone, even in this time of sorrow, we can take comfort in knowing that for your beloved Roger, life did not end but only changed. Even though his physical presence has relocated to the Heavenly FOB, Roger´s magnificent courage, dedication, devotion, gallantry, kindness, love, selfless service, patient endurance, and inspiring, faith-filled spirit shall remain with us always and will endure generations to come - "De Oppresso Liber".
Dearest Norma, we are with you all in spirit, standing right beside you, connected in love and prayers. May God bless and keep you always.

The world has lost a great humble hero. Roger, when a guest speaker at any event would always end his speech with his favorite quote.
"Always keep your Moral Compass pointing north" !!
He not only preached it, he and Norma lived it. Roger lead by example.
One of the highlights of my life was as Emcee of the Vietnam traveling wall in Saugerties July 20
2018, was to introduce Roger as guest speaker.
Sincere condolences to Norma and all of his family. Heaven has gained another Hero.

The Donlon Family,
Several decades ago while we were holding a memorial service in Vietnam - for a sailor who was with our SF team - the Navy Chaplain read a poem written by Henry Van Dyke. I cannot remember the exact words to that poem, but I recall these words for they describe to me what that poem spoke of. No words can ever replace Roger´s presence, but knowing he is in a safe harbor - free from pain - is our only comfort.

Gone from Our Sight
Losing a loved one is like watching a ship as it leaves the port - sailing onto the open sea.
To those watching from that shore, it becomes smaller and smaller as it slowly fades into the distance, until it is finally seen no more.
But on the other side - on another shore - someone else is watching this ship grow bigger and bigger as it approaches them, sailing into the safety of their secure port.
God has taken your beloved Roger to the safety of His secure port, and you can rest easy knowing he is in safe hands - in a safe port.

With much Love and Sorrow.

Col Donlon was the Bn Cdr of 3/7 SF in Panama in the mid 70s. I was a 20 yr old Infantry Buck Sgt who wanted more out of my military experience. I was serving in an Infantry Bn in CanalZone. I had a day off and took the train across the country to meet with LTC Donlon about what it took to become a Green Beret. He was gracious and gave me an hour of his time where HE mapped out a plan for me. He called my Units 1st and CD-R ( both former SF) and started the ball rolling. He helped a kid from Nebraska make his dream come true. Thank You sir, Rest in Peace-De oppressor libre.

The entire nation mourns his loss. It was an honor to have known him and to grow up in the same town as he. Everyone here in Saugerties knows the name of Roger Donlon.
