Roger Serge Plante, 95, of
Marblehead, MA, formerly of
New Harbor, ME and
South Weymouth, MA, passed away on December 24, 2022. He was born on December 13, 1927, in
Woonsocket, RI, to Joseph and Marie (Trinque) Plante. Roger was a beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was smart, funny, tough, stubborn, frugal and yet extremely generous, with an infectious laugh and immense love for his family.
After graduating from Woonsocket High School, Roger enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1946 to 1948. He later attended the University of Rhode Island where he earned his BS in Civil Engineering and an MS in Civil Engineering at Northeastern University.
Roger had a distinguished career with J.F. White Company as a construction superintendent where he was responsible for building many large structures in the greater Boston area. His projects included the Bondi Island sewerage treatment plant in
Agawam, MA, the high school in
Bennington, VT, NE Telephone building in Framingham, MA, Franklin Park Zoo and Quincy MBTA parking garage among many others. Roger had a strong work ethic and instilled these same values in his children and grandchildren balancing that with taking his family to local sporting events.
Roger retired to
New Harbor, ME with his late wife, Glenne, of over 50 years. He spent this time completing building projects around his house, as well as his son's houses, at times sending his son sketched plans on how to go about the project. He spent many winters with Glenne escaping the brutal Maine and Massachusetts weather by traveling to Mexico City, Costa Rica, and
Sarasota, FL. He also enjoyed any time he had with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him Papa, taking them to the dump in his truck, bringing them down the road to the "periwinkle pond", taking them fishing (once even heroically saving his young grandson who fell in the water between the docks at the pier), getting hot chocolate at Samoset, and embarrassing them when the opportunity arose. He greatly enjoyed his weekly (sometimes daily) calls with them well into their adulthood, that created a strong bond between them. When they were young, he even created a treasure hunt with the make believe pirate, Black Bart, fabricating a treasure map that was found in a bottle by the ocean, and burying gold coins in his backyard for them to dig up. So many fond memories were created with him over the years that his family will always cherish.
Roger is survived by his son Roger W. Plante and his wife Carol of Mendon, his daughter Suzanne Sumski and her husband Jack of Marblehead, his granddaughter Renee Derby and her husband Patrick, and his great-grandson Jacob of Franklin, his granddaughter Jacalyn Plante of Mendon, his grandson Andrew Plante and his wife Aryn Forman, and his great-grandson Benjamin of Mendon, and his granddaughter Krista Linder and her wife Samantha, and his great-grandson Maxwell of Salem plus several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Glenne (Arthur), his daughter Michele D, who passed away in 1967, his father Joseph Plante, his mother Marie (Trinque) Plante, his brother Roland Plante and his wife Therese, his brother Fernand Plante and his wife Marceline, and his sister Lucette Plante, who died in the 1930s.
Roger will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him but memories of him will never be forgotten.
