Roger Points Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 18, 2023.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Roger Ross Points, aged 82, on September 2, 2023, in Portland, Oregon. Roger was surrounded with love by his immediate family at the time of his death. He was born on September 4, 1940, in Ames, Iowa, to the late Ross and Ruth Points. Roger was a man of great character, known for his kindness, generosity, and love for his family.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife, Muriel, who was his devoted partner throughout their journey of 58 years of marriage. Roger was a loving father to his sons, Warren (Ronnie) Bent of Glen Ellyn, IL; David (Lynette) Bent of West Des Moines, IA; and Gary (Karen Hess) Points of Portland, Oregon; five grandchildren, Charles Bent, Sam Bent, Alex (Sara) Bent, Heather Bent and Holly Lyn (Harold) Goodell; four great-grandchildren, Avery Washington, Enzo Bent, Julianna Goodell and Anna Bianco; a sister, Rosalee Oakley, of Hadley, MA; nieces, Deborah Oakley and Cheryl Oakley, and several cousins. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Ross Points; sisters, Judith Ann Points and Betty Gail Points; brother-in-law, William Fred Oakley, Jr.; and nephew, Jordan Oakley.

Roger's educational journey included Ames Elementary and Junior High School and Gilbert High School, graduating in 1958. He furthered his education by graduating from the American Institute of Business where he obtained his Accounting and Business Management Degree.

Roger dedicated his career to the field of accounting. He diligently served as an accountant at Diamond Alkali in Des Moines, Iowa, Edgewood, Maryland, and Newark, Delaware. His expertise also benefited Abild Construction Company in Des Moines, CJM Financial in Ankeny, and JMS Transportation Company in Ankeny and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After many years of dedicated service, Roger retired in 2005, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and excellence.

In his leisure time, Roger found solace in his hobbies and interests. He selflessly devoted himself to coaching his sons' Little League Baseball teams and serving as a Cub Scout Webelo Leader. Roger loved traveling to most U.S. capitols, stamp collecting and had a deep admiration for NASCAR racing, finding excitement in the speed and competition. Above all, Roger found immense happiness in supporting his sons and grandsons in their sports endeavors and his granddaughters in their musical performances and sports events.

A Celebration of Life will be held on October 7, 2023, from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm at the Fox Creek Pavilion located at 522 NE Westgate Drive in Waukee, Iowa. This occasion will provide an opportunity for family, friends, and loved ones to share stories and honor Roger's memory. It is a time to reflect on the beautiful life he lived and the profound impact he made on those around him.

In honor of Roger's memory, family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to an organization of the donor's choice.

Roger Points will forever be remembered
as a man of unwavering character and devotion to his family. His legacy of kindness, generosity and love will continue to inspire all who knew him. May he rest in eternal peace.
