Roland was my boss at the Office of Economic Opportunity, SE Region in Atlanta, 1967-69. He was patient, kind, encouraging, funny and brave. Those were the heady idealistic early days of the War on Poverty, and not a finer man could have been one of its leaders.

Roland, my dear brother, this has been another year of firsts which we all wish you could have shared with us physically. However, we know that you were with us spiritually and witnessed them all!
Can you believe that we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Alanta Student Movement?! I remember how worried you, Ralph, Mother and Daddy were about Wylma, Danny and me when we were arrested. You will be happy to know that we included all the grandkids in our celebrations. Ahmad entered CAU as a freshman; all of your children and grandchildren and Ralph participated in the renaming of Fair Street between Northside Drive and Lowery Blvd Atlanta Student Movement Boulevard. This was the first time that the City of Atlanta officially recognized our sacrifices. It was great to have Ahmir (CAU 6th generation)and his drum line lead the march to the dedication site while Rolanda and Beth marched and took pictures.
Ralph, Ford and Lawrence are being feted by Georgia Tech for the 50th Anniversay of their integrating the school.
And guess what? I heard you very clearly on October 30th when you reminded me that I "caught up with you, again" - Happy 70th Birthday, my brother and friend!
We love you and miss you terribly!

Roland's light will forever shine. I thank God for the legacy he left to/for my grandsons Amir R. Henry and Ahmad Q. Henry.
April 29, 2010
As we do our children (enjoy each stage) I would like to take the time to enjoy/recognize our grandson, Ahmad Q. Henry. Next month, he will walk across the stage, get his diploma, and complete high school. Praise the Lord. God bless the children, the parents, the grands, the family, and friends. Roland's spirit lives on.

I am not certain how this goes as to notations; however, one thing for sure, Roland and Wylma and Bob and I share the same "first" grandchild (second also). With this I am exercising our grandparents' rights with this glorious announcement: Amir Shaheed Henry, upon completion of his first semester at Clark Atlanta University, made The Dean's List. And the legend continues. Praise the Lord.

I have pondered over the last year about how I could acknowledge your presence and absence in our lives. You played so many roles in this family from son to father, and brother to friend. In all of these roles you were the consummate provider, ever giving, never seeking. This document is illustrative of your relationship with many, with wisdom and guile, humor and concern, equal and strong, but not overbearing. We have adapted to your absence, though slowly, over this past season. However, the resilience and reflect-ability that you have instilled in all of us becomes more and more evident everyday. A new canter and love has begun, emanating from your shining star. Yours in everything.

Hello All:
During this season of Advent, December birthdays, and Christmas, we can think on the good things and the good times and memories. "Aunt" Carolyn gave a great report. In addition, with the Henry crew 'all is well' in Boston, the ATL, Texas, NY and more. Jumaada is holding up the Lector end. Yesterday I did the 2nd Reading and the Intercessory Prayers.
Remember,be strong and think on the good things, and the blessings, and the wonderful spirit of Roland. Rejoice.

Roland Edward Blanding, Jr.,
Nearly thirteen months have passed since you physically left this place that we call earth. During that time, nary a day has past that I did not think about you and the many things we shared as buddies since we first met 28 years ago. While I sorely miss your physical presence, I continue to find comfort and joy in your everlasting spirit, which lingers on. Continue to rest in peace my "tight man".

Roland,
This has been a bittersweet year since we celebrated your home-going!! These are a few things you physically missed but we shared spiritually:
* Wylma is lonely but is still keeping as strong as ever;
* Beth is still the favorite aunt of all the grand kids;
* Roland, III is continuing your head of-the-household role;
* Rolanda and her family are doing great. Amir, your first grandchild, enrolled as the sixth-generation of our family to attend our Alma Mater, Clark College/Clark Atlanta University; Ahmad became the second Henry to become Homecoming King at his high school. He chose Chiana, his baby sister, to be his escort. Baby Keith still has my eyes and is dancing up a storm!!
* Harlyn is the captain of the Inman Middle School basketball team while her brothers, Horace, Jr. and Hayden are playing AAU basketball. They all are, also, still "A" students. They have their parents, April and Horace, Sr. driving all over town.
* I retired for the third time in January and this time I'm taking your advice and enjoying life. Ralph and I miss and love you, the only big brother we have ever had.
Your sis,
Carolyn

I am at a complete loss, because I just found out just today ... Thanksgiving Day ... that Roland had passed away. When my father and mother passed away, Roland was one of the first people who came to the house and he was so supportive in both cases. I was obviously devastated each time, but Roland helped me get through it all. I cannot express how sad and hurt I am, but I do know that it pales in comparison to what the family has and is going through. My sincere condolences
and heartfelt sympathy go out to the family.
Finally, I know that Roland said that he would see my mom and dad again ... I hope they are all looking down on us and and know that we will all be okay.

My deepest condolences to Roland's family. Reading of his accomplishments and the very positive impressions he made on people's lives is no surprise. I remember when he was leaving home (Sumter,SC) to go to CC in Atlanta. (50 years ago) He was an accomplished young man then and must have gone on to great achievements. May you, the family find the comfort that is promised in the Bible at 2 Corinthians 1:2-4.

Ms. Blanding & Family,
I extend my deepest sorrow to hear of yours and our loss of Roland -- an EEO professional who had the courage, fortitude and passion to perform his job impartially and with the highest degree of integrity and fairness, based on facts -- these qualities are rarely found and seemingly near non-existent in Government EEO Management. I pray for your strength to celebrate Roland's life; and know that many others share your loss in the many ways that Roland touched our lives.
