ROLF HAGEN Obituary
Rolf C. Hagen was a pillar in the pet products industry who touched many with his generosity and compassion.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Rolf C. Hagen, who left us suddenly yet peacefully at his home in Montreal surrounded by his loving wife Marianne and grandson Justin on Saturday, October 22, 2011.
Rolf C. Hagen was born in 1932, the third of 10 children, in a small seaside town in northern Germany.
In 1955, inspired by a simple idea, he came to Canada and sowed the seeds of Rolf C. Hagen Inc., which blossomed to become one of the world's largest family-owned manufacturers and distributors of pet care products.
He started by acquiring bird seeds from the Canadian prairies and exporting them back to Germany. His small export business eventually flourished and branched out into a solid, well-respected pet supplies business that today spans many continents.
Soon after setting up his business in Montreal, his focus turned to the most significant import of his life: a beautiful young woman named Marianne Koch, whom he met in Hamburg and married in Montreal in 1959.
His brothers Dieter and Horst subsequently joined the company, both of whom brought new energy and innovation to the company, taking it to new heights of success. The trio formed the first generation of an emerging family-based company that would later include Rolf C. Hagen's three beloved sons, Mark, Tom, and Rolf Jr.
Those who did business with Mr Hagen were often inspired by his simple and ethical approach to commerce, often sealing business deals with his firm handshake and honouring them with his word, which was as good as gold.
Over the years, Mr Hagen was honoured with many awards in the pet products industry. In June 1999, he was inducted into the American Pet Products Association Hall of Fame, the highest honour that can be bestowed upon an individual in the pet industry. In March 2004, he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pet Industry Distributors Association in recognition for innovative design of pet products and for his generous support of organizations and individuals dedicated to improving the lives of both pets and people. He is the only individual in his industry to have received both awards.
In 1996, he received The First Cross of the Federal Order of Merit from Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz der 1. Klasse). In 2005, he was awarded The Highest Order of Merit (Grosses Bundesverdienstkreuz am Band) from the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, the highest honour that Germany can bestow upon a civilian.
Despite all his business successes and accolades, Rolf C. Hagen remained a humble and selfless man who did not lose touch with many of life's timeless and enduring values: love, kindness, humility, compassion, and generosity. Though he soared in business, he was deeply grounded in his love for humanity and pets, giving away much of what he amassed to individuals, schools, churches and charitable organizations in Canada as well as all over the world.
Helen Keller once said that it is better to walk with a friend in the dark than alone in the light. Rolf C. Hagen will be remembered for being a friend to those who walked in the dark.
Rolf C. Hagen leaves behind his beloved wife of 52 years, Marianne, his children Mark (Caroline), Tom (Teresa), and Rolf Jr (Valerie), his grandchildren Sasha, Justin, Katia, Ashley, Brittany, Kaitlin, Matthew, William, and Christian. He is survived by his two brothers Dieter (Inge) and Horst (Jutta), sister-in-law Lilo, sisters Hannelore (Hanne), Marga (the late Joergen), Anne (Manfred), and Karin (Karl-Willi), and predeceased by his brothers Walter (Gisela), Fritz (Marlene) and Uwe (the late Gerda). He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews and long time friends and colleagues.
The family will receive condolences on Thursday, October 27 from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday, October 28 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Urgel Bourgie, 3955 Cote de Liesse, Montreal, QC H4N 2N6. View register at www.urgelbourgie.com
Funeral Services to be held on Saturday, October 29 at 11:00 a.m. at St-Sixte Church, 1895, rue de L'Eglise, Ville St-Laurent, Qc H4M 1E6.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jewish General Hospital Cardiology: Coronary Care Unit or St Paul's Lutheran Church in St-Laurent.

I do not personally met Mr Rolf, but I had the opportunity to meet his son Rolf and Tom by work issues. Two Knights, which undoubtedly received their education, not only in the professional field but also in the ethical party of Mr Hagen's Party. Mr Rolf, leaves a tremendous legacy for all those who work in the world of pets, we could not never deny the great icon which will be for us. God has it in its glory, it deserves recognition that can be given. Blessings:

Rolf Hagen had a dream. He came to Canada and through hard work and honest business dealings, he climbed to become on of the pet industries most respected leaders. With his innovative pet products and quality assurances, his company quickly became respected not just by his peers, but by independent pet store owners, such as myself. I will remember Rolf C. Hagen with great respect and fondness. For he was a great man who cared for his people. He certainly threw the best customer appreciation parties!

I did not know Mr. Hagen personally, however, own many of the fine products that some of companies (Aquaclear, GLO, Fluval) produce for the aquarium industry. Mr. Hagen was truly a giant in the business world, and from what I have read about him recently, a wonderful human being as well.

Mit tiefer Bestürzung und Trauer habe ich erst heute durch meinem Freund Joel Viutti vom Tod unseres Freundes Rolf C. Hagen erfahren.
Gleich gingen mir die vielen schönen Momente und Stunden, die wir auch außerhalb des Skatspielens gemeinsam mit ihm verbringen durften, durch den Kopf.
Sein Tod ist nicht nur ein großer Verlust für die ISPA Canada, sondern auch für alle, die das Glück hatten diesen wohl einzigartigen Menschen kennenzulernen.

Pete and I are so sorry not to have been able to attend the visitations and service for Rolf, to pay our deepest respects. We have been out of the country.
Many memories abound from those earlier years. Upon arrival from northern Germany in the fifties, my family became part of the German social community, establishing new lives in a strange, new country.
Many special memories are those with and of my Papa Paul Schaller Sr., while delivering the German magazines of his "Montreal Lesezirkel Daheim" to the Hagens. It was the laughter and camaraderie of Rolf and his brothers during all the hard work and the challenging times, I fondly remember most as a younger girl. Of Rolf, Papa Paul had told me myriad stories over the many years, especially about the good "Skat" times, when I was a much older girl.
Over the past fifty years plus, my family has had the privilege of being in contact with this extraordinary, good and kind person. Although not always face-to-face, Rolf was continuously somewhere in our families' lives. And, what a people person he was! No matter who you were, Rolf always had a certain humility and grace, as he walked his journey through the years with his loving and devoted wife Marianne.
To have had such care, compassion and concern for the pets and the people, over these many years, and growing the company with his family to world-class status, there can only be honour and accolades.
What a legacy that has been left. All the intelligence, industry, and generosity have been with and continues to be with this phenomenal HAGEN family.
May you, Rolf,ride on the wings of angels to Heaven, and Rest In Peace.

We were shocked and very saddened to learn of Mr. Hagen's passing. Please accept our deepest condolences and prayers. Although we have "lost touch" over the last few years, many memories and emotions now spring forth. Having known Mr. Hagen since childhood, I will always remember him as a very kind, generous and caring man. Having met Mr. Hagen only a few times and at a very young age, Max still remembers him. His fondest memory is of the "nice man" who gave him a "gold medal" for his diving abilities at one of Horst Hagen's pool parties. Al was always impressed with Mr. Hagen's keen interest in the world and people. He recalls some interesting converstions with him. Mr. Hagen was a remarkable man who will live on through his family, his work and in the hearts and minds of the people who knew him. I know that we will never forget him.

Lasst uns unser Turnier in Freundschaft und Harmonie verbringen waren stets Worte seiner Eröffnungs Addresse.In diesem Sinn genossen Skatspieler der ISPA Kanada/USA und einige tausend Skatfreunde aus aller Welt unvergeßliche „Reizvolle“ Stunden. A “Skat-brother” of particular image has left us forever. Rolf once saved the existence of the then ailing ISPA Canada. The annual Canadian Skat Champion Tournament, soon known as "Hagen Tournament", was his idea which quickly under his patronage and generous sponsorship became the largest and most popular Skat tournament in North America. Let us spend our tournament in friendship and harmony were always words in his opening speeches. In this sense, Skat friends of ISPA Canada/ USA and several thousand Skat-friend from around the world enjoyed many memorable hours. The Canadian Skat Champion Tournament will forever be a monument in our hearts to a warm-hearted, generous Skat-brother Rolf C. Hagen.

I was at Mr.Hagen's funeral last Saturday and I still think about him a few times a day. It was a beautiful funeral and I think he would have been very happy with the way his family presented it. The speeches were warm and thoughtful and really represented him perfectly. Mr. Hagen was like my second father. Our family knew him on a personal level, since my father and he had been friends since before they were even married. My parents and Mr. and Mrs Hagen always kept contact with one another and as they got older they would enjoy talking about their good old days. Mr. Hagen was my shadow throughout my life and never failed to be present or to think of me at every important moment in my life such as my engagement party, my wedding, my honeymoon, our children's Christenings, my move from Sainte-Agathe to Boston, and many more occasions. He was always more generous than he needed to be, but that was also what made him so much fun.
When we were children and my parents needed to fly somewhere and leave for a longer period of time, they would always tell my brother and I "If something bad should happen to us, go see Mr. Hagen, he will take care of you". And that's what he did so well for so many people. He took care of them.
I and all of my family will miss him very much. We love you, Mr. Hagen.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Mr Rolf Hagen. For many years, my wildlife charity, Urban Animal Advocates, has benefitted from very generous donations of food and supplies for our wild animal patients. Mr. Hagen is a great person. I was inspired by his great generosity and kindess. I learn a lot from him how important for the family. His sucessful business created thousands of pet products for animal welfare. My wife and I always remember him as millions of people all over the world, who love animals. Mr. Hagen is a great example for my life.

Dear Hagen family,
I was saddened to read about the death of Rolf. I know how hard this is. You are in my thoughts.
Rolf was such a real outstanding person and I am glad that I had the chance to meet him.
My time of working in his crew ended in 2004 suddenly, but I will never forget his personality.
He brought a lot of kindness to a lot of people and he achieved so much.
I know you will miss him, but I encourage you to get strength off the cohesion of your family.

I would just like tto take this moment to send my deepest condolenses to the family and friends of MR. ROLF HAGEN as I have been a longtime fan of Hagen products for my pets , mainly syrian hamsters and more recently , a canary . As a child , it was his line of cages and food products that were available mainly in the pet stores in HALIFAX NOVA SCOTIA where I grew up as a child.. many thanks for helping to instill in me a love and ongoing affection and admiration for animals , his cages housed my little hammies as a young girl and have beeen home sweet home to my hammies in adult life , hisd food seed mixes have nourished my little furry and feathered friends and the veterinarians were always pleased that they were healthy ... I am very saddened to learn of your sudden passing and do hope that this letter and others letters which the HAGEN family recieve may in some small way lessen their pain , be of some comfort to them ... many blessings to the HAGENS and friends ... sincerest regards ,.. Liebe Marianne and family, we are all sadened by the loss of your husband, father, brother, grandfather. Rolf was a wonderful man, we always will rembember this kind and unselfish man who loved everyone around him. We had the opportunity to get to know Rolf through all the Skat tournaments. Especially myself Rolf always remembered, that I had my birthday in Montreal and never forgot me even though I sometimes was unable to be in Montreal, because of sickness, but he still send a card and his special coins with my husband. He always was the one who asked how we all are and always had some special words for us. We were sorry, that he had to suffer the last couple of years and he now has no more pain and is in a better place.
The coming days and month will be very hard for all of you, especially for you Marianne, we hope and pray for you and your loved ones that God may help you overcome your pain and suffering of his loss. He was a great man and friend, we always will remember him in our hearts and our prayers are with all of you for that great loss you had. The world really lost a great man.

To Mrs. Hagen, Mark, Tom, Rolf Jr., to Dieter and Horst, and the entire Hagen family, our deepest sympathies.
Mr. Hagen possessed many qualities that simply commanded respect. His actions spoke of the depth of his character. He made me and my family feel appreciated and for that we were very happy to have known him. My children recall with fondness meeting him at Christmas parties and how he would remark how much they had grown.
His voice and presence will be missed.

To the Hagen family, my sincere condolences go out to you. I met Mr Hagen in 1994 for the first time at a annual trade show in Montreal. The following year at the show, it was his "firm handshake and his word" that sealed the deal with me to open my pet store shortly after. Without his trust and support then and at times since then, he has enabled me to continue to this day.
A Great man is gone but will never be forgotten.
