Roman A. "Romie" Meyer, age 81 of Freeport, died Sunday, April 13, 2008 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by the Freeport Fire Fighters and the St. Joseph's Men's Society at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the church. Roman Meyer was born August 9, 1926 in Oak Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Theodore and Theresa (Rademacher) Meyer. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Shangri-La, and witnessed the atomic bomb test at Bikini Atoll. He was united in marriage to Rose Nietfeld on Aug. 30, 1951 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Greenwald, MN. He farmed on the family farm west of Freeport. During retirement, he discovered his talent for woodworking and also served a term as Mayor of Freeport. Nothing was more special to Roman than time spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Survivors include his children, Daniel (Cheryl) Meyer of Freeport, Gerald "Jerry" (Deb) Meyer of Freeport, Sue (Joe) Wilken of St. Cloud, and Mary (Leon) Klaphake of Melrose; grandchildren, Eric, Craig and Heather Meyer, Missy, Michelle, and Mindy Meyer, Brian and Thomas Wilken, Ashley and Chris Klaphake; and brother, Rich (Betty) Meyer of San Diego, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rose Meyer on March 31, 2008; brothers, Norbert, Leo, Edwin, and Paul Meyer; sisters, Beata Schulzetenberg, Marina Bertram, Alma Worms, and Dorothy Korte. Serving as casket bearers will be Eric Meyer, Craig Meyer, Mindy Meyer, Heather Meyer, Michelle Meyer, Brian Wilken, Thomas Wilken, and Ashley Klaphake. Cross bearer will be Missy Meyer and scripture bearer will be Chris Klaphake. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Pine Villa Chapel Renovation Project.
