Ronald SUTHERLAND Obituary

Published by Monteal Gazette from Dec. 4 to Dec. 5, 2013.
SUTHERLAND, Dr. Ronald
1933 - 2013
On November 29, 2013, Ronald Sutherland left this earth peacefully in the comfort of his home library, surrounded by family, friends and books. He was predeceased by loving wife Velma-Jean Carter in 1995. Emeritus Professor of the Université de Sherbrooke, he was one of the founders of the Canadian Comparative Literature program and a well- known author of many published articles, humorous vignettes for newspapers, & novels. Ron will also be remembered as a talented bagpiper, avid beekeeper, relentless solver of crosswords, mentor for many, but especially as a man of generous, hospitable and non judgemental character. With great optimism he channelled intellect, wit, and mastery into all his life's accomplishments. Patriarch of an extended family, Ron leaves in mourning his children, Janet, Katherine (Peter Raymond), Velma, Winona, Colin (Hélène Trudel), nine grandchildren, sister Margaret Wilkins, two half-brother and eight half-sisters (Bignone), many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, endless friends and colleagues. The family wishes to thank all those who contributed to make his last days comfortable and peaceful, in particular the staff of the home care unit of the Memphrémagog hospital, caregiver, and the pharmacy. In lieu of flowers, donations to the library of North Hatley (165 Main Street, North Hatley, QC, J0B 2C0, www.nhlibrary.qc.ca) or to The Canadian Legion #242 (95 Street Jackson Heights, North Hatley, QC, J0B 2C0) would be greatly appreciated. The family will be present to receive the condolences of relatives and friends at the Steve L. Elkas Funeral Home, 601 rue du Conseil, in Sherbrooke, Qc, J1G 1K4, (819-565-1155), from 14:00 to 16:00, Friday, December 6. After that, you are invited to join us at the wake for a drink to the memory of Ron, at the local Legion #242 of North Hatley.

Ron was my Professor and Thesis Supervisor in the '80s at U of S. He was certainly one of my favorite Professors and highly respected friends. May his soul rest in peace, and his family and friends send him prayers whenever they read a letter or a book.

I knew Ron in Maisonneuve. His passing brings back great memories of growing up with him in that unique district of Montreal. Rest in peace Ron.

I have many fond memories of growing up with Ron in Maisonneuve; playing hockey together with the Boys Brigade and our days at elementary school. Glenna and I send our condolences to Velma and the extended family.

Ron, Doug, 2 Moniques, Larry, and Avrum made North Hatley a haven for me. After so many years, I'm still grateful for that experience. Anyone familiar with these friends, that time, and that place will know just how unique that experience was. It was a gift to have known Ron.

Mr.Sutherland was one of the most generous and sincere people I ever knew. His uncommon charm made him a natural role model for all of us who were lucky enough to cross paths with him.

I'm so sorry to hear about your father. He was a wonderful man, and always so proud of his family. He was my mentor and I have warm memories of all he did for me when I was writing my thesis. I had my wedding reception in your home and spent hours on your verandah with my nursing babies... Your parents' encouragement and support are precious to me. I wish you the comfort of sweet memories.

My most sincere sympathies to the entire family.

I had a chance to work with Ron 10 years ago and he was always a joy to spend time with.

Discussions were always lively, interesting and full of humour.

Bye Ron.

My deepest sympathy to Margaret and the rest of Ron's family. I grew up with Ron in Maisonneuve. We were friends for many years. I talked to Ron 2 years ago on the phone and when a friend e-mailed me today, I was shocked with the news. I have lots of fond memories of Ron and will never forget him.

Janet...Katherine...Velma...Winona...Colin...My sympathies are with you in the loss of your Dad. It brings a sad memory of when my dad passed away. Uncle Ronnie was such inspiration for me & I had so much respect for him & your Mom. I feel such a tremendous loss myself as he was someone I enjoyed spending time with, respected & loved. I want to be there for support for all of you at your time of loss but due to the situation I am in at work I am unable to get free. I will say my goodbyes when I visit your Dad resting beside your Mom & my Dad. I imagine Uncle Ronnie & Dad are playing pool right now & your Mom is sitting close by with her legs crossed underneath her, barefoot & having a few laughs. I miss them all very much as my tears fall. May time soften the loss of our loved ones....My heart is with all of you...Barry

Ron and I have known each other from before school years. It is only because of a health problem that I wont be with you on Friday. I enjoyed his company at two of the last four Maxwell Games and shared a lot o memories. Goodbye Ron
