Rosalie K. Steinmetz of Denver, formally of McLean, VA and Boulder, CO, went peacefully to Heaven Wednesday, May 7, 2014 in Denver. Her daughter Alberta was by her side. Rosalie was born on October 29, 1919 in Norcatur, Kansas to Peter Henry and Mamie Belle (Leist) Kilzer. Rosalie was raised in Lebanon, NE, graduating from high school in 1937.
She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan with a BA degree in the fields of Geography and Geology in 1941. While at NWU, she was involved in geography related field trips, university and church choirs, participated in school sporting events, and were a sorority member of Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity. Rosalie then joined the Women's Army Corp (WAC) and became one of the first nine WAC officers in the intelligence division. Her career took her to the Pentagon, the European Command Headquarter in Germany and the Army Security Agency. While in Germany she met and married Master Sergeant Alfred J. Steinmetz in 1949, who was also in the Army Security Agency. Rosalie retired from the military as a Major in 1952.
In 1980 Rosalie and Al moved from McLean, VA to Boulder. She was active First Presbyterian Church, NARFE, the Boulder American Legion, as an alumna member of Alpha Gamma Delta and other community organizations. She loved to travel and devoted a great deal of her time to disabled children. Her husband Alfred predeceased her in 1988. In 2005 she moved from Boulder to Denver.
She is survived by her daughter Rev. Alberta Belle Steinmetz of Lakewood, numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and one brother. Visitation will be held 4 to 7 pm Wednesday May 21 at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary 7777 W. 29th Ave. Wheat Ridge. Funeral service to be held 11 am Thursday May 22 at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary, interment to follow at Green Mountain Cemetery in Boulder. Military honors will be provided by the US Army Honor Guard and John Harold Buckley American Legion Post 32. To send condolences to the family please go to www.cristmortuary.com.
