Ross T. Mtangi, of East 38th Street, New York, NY passed away unexpectedly on March 18th, 2021. Ross was the devoted companion of Adiba Alam of New York, NY and the beloved son of Lauren M. Lackey of RI and CT, and Stanlake A. Mtangi of Louisville, KY. Ross was the adoring brother of Shamiso L. Mtangi of Brooklyn, NY. Ross was a loyal friend, supportive mentor, and inspiring colleague to many.
Born in Providence, Ross was an East Providence townie to his core. His relentless work ethic developed at age 10 when he started delivering newspapers for the Providence Journal, with routes on Boyd Ave and Evergreen Apts.
A natural athlete, Ross enjoyed playing basketball on the courts of Evergreen and St. Martha's Church, teaching his sister to swim at New England Health & Racquet, and dancing to 90s hip hop while listening to KIX 106. As a child, and continuing through adulthood, Ross delighted in a cold Del's, topped with a pretzel rod. When he learned to drive, the speakers of his Ford Probe announced his arrival, blaring Midnight Marauders by A Tribe Called Quest. Often from a block away.
Ross was a 1999 graduate of Scituate High School. He went on to study at Harvard University, from which he graduated in 2003 with a degree in economics. As a young trader in New York City, Ross excelled in the world of finance and was globally regarded as a brilliant mind in equity derivatives. He also deepened his exploration of philosophy, political science, and spirituality. Ross felt compelled to participate in peaceful protests, to contribute to progressive causes, and to advocate for the underdog. Ross believed in a world where a townie from East Providence could achieve his wildest dreams and hold the door for others to follow.
Our family was truly blessed to have had Ross with us for 40 years. Ross was laid to rest beside his adoring grandmother, Madeline F. Lackey, on March 26th at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence, RI.
