We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to you Mrs. Cooper and your family.

Philip and I met Roy through the Learning Disability Ottawa-Carleton Association several years ago and had attended his workshop. He advocated learning assistance at the school for our son, Nicholas who has a learning disability.

Thanks to Roy's advocacy, Nicholas is doing very well and getting the assistance he needs. We are so grateful to him for all his help. He was a very caring and special person. He will be greatly missed!

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cooper while attending one of his workshops this summer. I want to express my deepest sympathies to your family. Mr Cooper was a great help tp me and my family, he consulted me on enrolling my youngest Autistic Daughter Abigail into Kindergarden, at a time when people did not think she should attend a school. Her first day was September 10 2008 and she is excelling with her acedemics. Also very happy there.

Thank you Mr. Cooper and God Bless You!!!!!!

To The Cooper Family,
Our deepest sympathies to your whole family. I grew up next door to Mr. Cooper. He was such a friendly man and always had a smile for me, even though my cat would sometimes keep them up all night. He was always there to help out my dad whenever he needed anything. Thank you for being such a wonderful person and the best neighbor ever. You will be truly missed by my whole family especially my dad. Love Carolyn, Sheri, Alanna, Cheryl and my dad-Bob.

Roy was a tremendously passionate advocate and it was both a privilege and a pleasure to serve alongside him on the LDAO-C Board and to volunteer alongside him at chapter events. His energy and his laugh will be missed.

Roy was such a great supporter of children with special needs. His many years as a member of the Ontario Council for Exceptional Children is a testament to that. It wasn't so very long ago that we had an opportunity to raise a toast to Roy in his retirement from the OCEC Board of Directors, with a fine bottle of scotch. I have many memories of lively discussions intermingled with Roy's great sense of humour, stories and passion for making a difference in the lives of students with exceptionalities, particularly, students with learning disabilities. You will be fondly remembered and sadly missed. Slainte Roy

Dear Shirly and family,

Roy took me under his wing in the gravity field work of the early eighty's. He showed me Canada, driving to the west and east coasts, to places that most people will never see. Roy and I put in thousands of kilometers on the road, in all those times he never had a bad thing to say about anything. Roy was always in good humor, always had a smile after some of the most gruelling work, and when we were done for the day, he loved to show me all the best places to eat, the Keg in the west and the Five Fishermen in Halifax, his home town.

On the road he would drive and drive without rest, he knew the country like the back of his hand, all the places to stay, all the places to eat, all the places to gas up. He was truly an inspirational person to me.

Roy measured gravity, and he did this throughout the country, he did thousands of measurements in some of the hardest places to go to, in the roughest conditions.

We our sending a lot of historical equipment to the Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa, and most of those boxes have R.V.Cooper on them, Roy will be remembered.

I will miss this companion, this gravity guy, he will always be one of ours in the gravity division.

Dear family and friends of Roy Cooper,

Roy's former Natural Resources Canada's colleagues were saddened to hear the news that he passed away last Friday. I wish to pass along most sincere condolences to all Roy's family and friends.

We had the pleasure of working with him for some many years. Roy worked in the Earth Sciences Sector of the Department of Natural Resources Canada, initially with the Dominion Observatory, then the Earth Physics Branch, the Geophysics Division and finally with the Geodetic Survey Division before his retirement.

His hard work, and spirited determination set an example to many of us who knew him. He worked in all types of gravity surveys, either in the high Arctic, at sea or in the air, and he excelled in all of them. He is also remembered and admired for his personal work in children with learning disabilities.

He left a memorable impression with everyone he worked with, leaving us all with fond memories of his time here. We will always remember his contributions to Canada, the Federal government as well as to children with learning disabilities.

With deepest sympathy,

The Director Geodetic Survey Division
Natural Resources Canada

Good memories persist. In Halifax, Roy's hometown, he would not leave a colleague alone in a room but would share all his time spent with family and friends. He was proud to do this for every one was a rare pleasure to meet and visit.

Roy Cooper 1938 --- 2008
My condolences to Roy?s wife Shirley, Roy?s 4 kids; Roy?s brother Ken and their families.

The world has lost a loving and caring family man, a strong personality, positive and influencial force as an advocate and spokesperson for students with disabilites.

My dear friend Roy, whom I have gotten to know over the past several years, has dedicated his time and effort to helping kids with Learning Disability (LD). Roy always wanted to help and share his knowledge and experience with others. One of Roy?s favorite expressions was: ?if I could help one more learning disabled kid, to stay in school, to graduate, to get a diploma and succeed in life, I would be the happiest person in the world?. As well as, ?If I could help parents with LD kids to cope, and to work with the system, and with resources like the Learning Disability Association, so they can advocate for their kids, guide and educate them, I would be a grateful person?.

For Roy it was a pleasure think to do, he loved it and got lots of satisfaction helping people!

Roy has been an integral part of the Ontario, Canadian, and International Council for Exceptional Children (CEC); as well he was a leading force in the Learning Disability Association (LDA) of Ottawa, LDA Ontario and Canada for many years, and a good friend who was admired by all those who knew him.

I first met Roy at the Learning Disability Association of Ontario, and later I was privileged to inherit from him the treasurer position at the CEC Ontario. Roy has also worked with Microcomputer Science Centre as a trainer & consultant for kids with learning disabilities. He loved what he did and kids, parents, and teachers whose lives he touched loved him as much. In the words of one of these parents, :
Erin, a mother of 2 LD kids wrote:
?I have many fond and varied memories of Roy. He always found the time to answer the phone and call back anyone at anytime. His home phone was always and still is a place where someone knew that there was a response to a crisis. His wife Shirley is also a person who demonstrated concern for all the children and always has a kind word.
Even if you are frustrated with a situation and no one including a school could help, Roy's never ending knowledge would get you a long-term resolution.

Carin Goodman, who is a Past President of CEC Rideau Chapter,
Retired Special Education Teacher, the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, had the following to say about Roy, ?
Roy was always interested in technology and would attend many workshops on the subject. He has for the last couple of years been a much revered trainer of students with personal laptops to help them in their learning. Roy's gentle but firm manner and positive outlook made the sessions not only filled with learning but also enjoyable. He would always make sure that the teachers also were involved in the training, so that the students would have classroom support as well.

Roy Cooper would be the first, I would turn to when in a dilemma. His suggestions were both practical and sensible as well as "doable".

Finally, I want to assure Roy?s family that Roy?s legacy will be his enthusiasm and tireless efforts to help kids to succeed in school and in life and these efforts will never be forgotten.

Roy and I spent many an hour together traveling by road, plane and ship establishing Gravity Calibration Standards throughout Canada. All in all we drove from sea to sea sometimes via Austin, Texas many times over. We spent many weeks at a time aboard various survey ships, some good and others not so. I recollect ending one particularly miserable cruise in Halifax. The first thing we did ashore was to go to Roy’s favorite Chinese Restaurant, order and eat every bit of dinner for four. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and Roy was one of the best.
