Roy G. Settle, 84, of Owensboro, died there Wednesday, January 31, 2007. Born in Evansville, IN, a son of the late Roy G., Sr. and Clarice Hayes Settle, Mr. Settle was a graduate of Calhoun High School, the Louisiana State University School of Banking, and the Wharton School of Business. His career included service as vice-president of the former Owensboro National Bank and Central Bank and Trust and as executive vice-president of Paris National Bank. He joined Hilliard-Lyons in the late 1960s and after 18 years retired as Senior Vice President and Branch Manager. He was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church and had been active with the Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Settle was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, having served on mine sweepers clearing the waters for LST landings for the D-Day invasion. The ship on which he served was destroyed and Mr. Settle was recovered from the English Channel by the British Navy. He received the Purple Heart for the injuries he sustained and was hospitalized in England and later Memphis.
An accomplished athlete, Mr. Settle played baseball and basketball in high school and semi-pro baseball in the former Kentucky-Indiana League, and was an avid golfer. He refereed high school and college basketball for more than 20 years
Surviving are his wife of years, Judy Bennett Settle; his children, David Gates Settle and his wife Shelley, R. Mitchell Settle and his wife Kim, and Rebecca Helmers and her husband John, all of Owensboro; his grandchildren, Sarah Hagan of Lexington, Dr. Christian Altman of Chicago, and Julie Moore, Emily Settle, Eric Chapdelaine, Sydney Settle, and Shelby Settle, all of Owensboro, his great-grandchildren, Tucker Hagan and Josie Hagan, both of Lexington; and his brothers, Delbert Settle of Calhoun and Kenneth Settle of Owensboro.
Services, officiated by the Rev. Todd Love and the Rev. Dr. Glenn Sowards, are 11:30 Friday at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation at Glenn Funeral Home will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday and from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Memorial Fund of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church.
