Roy Steeley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 22, 2013.
STEELEY , Roy S. Roy Stuart Steeley, 93, of Charles Town, WV, died peacefully in his home, after a brief illness, on Saturday, March 16, 2013. A longtime resident of Charles Town, and formerly of Leesburg, VA, Mr. Steeley was born April 6, 1919 in Manhattan, NY. He was the son of the late Leroy and Helen Stuart Steeley. Mr. Steeley grew up in New York and completed studies at the Pratt Institute following his education in engineering. He was a veteran of the vending machine manufacturing trade, and considered by many as an "industry legend", serving the industry almost sixty years. He began his career in the vending industry, working for Victor Products in Hagerstown, MD, before becoming President of Dixie-Narco, located in Ranson, WV. Also known as an industry innovator, he then, at age sixty- seven, retired from Dixie-Narco and founded Royal Vendors in Kearneysville, WV, where he served as President for 10 years. In 1996, he sold Royal Vendors and founded a new manufacturing enterprise, Automated Merchandising System which manufactures vending machines for a variety of items from soft drinks to tools. Operations are located in Kearneysville, WV, and Guadalajara, Mexico, where he remained as CEO until his passing. As a younger man, Mr. Steeley served the community in many capacities including positions on the boards of the Animal Welfare Society and Blakeley Bank. He was also an instrument rated pilot and enjoyed playing tennis. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Gwen Scott Steeley, M.D.; his sister Arlene Steeley Westerfield of St. Louis, MO; four grandchildren Kevin Steeley, Brian Steeley, Colleen Happy, all of Charles Town, WV and Adam Potter of Boulder, CO; and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Thomas Steeley, one son Lee R. Steeley, and one daughter Dolores S. Steeley.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Covenant Church, 7485 Shepherdstown Pike, Shepherdstown, WV. Arrangements by Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, Charles Town. Memorial contributions may be made to: Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, WV, 25403. I had the most respect for Mr. Steeley and his family. He is truly an Icon to me:) I worked at Royal Vendors & AMS. Seeing him at AMS still coming to work everyday at his age just simply amazed me. The biggest privledge was being able to shake his hand because he still came out and seen his employees. I am saddened by the loss but he is in a much better place now. Prayers and condolences to the entire family.

Mr. Steeley was an icon. He will be missed.

His leadership and vision was instrumental in shaping the future of hundreds of people who worked for him directly and indirectly.
