Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 29, 2009.

CARRASCO, Ruben Rubio
October 16, 1938 - November 13, 2009
Beloved husband of 50 years to Mary Jane Rojo, adoring father to his twin daughters Coreen Carrasco and Noreen Mikulas (Randy), loving grandfather to Randall, Andrew and Brandson Mikulas, Derek, Brandon and Adam Carrasco, and Larry, Vanessa, Jessica and Dominik Chacon. On November 13, 2009, he passed away in Sacramento, where he had been a resident since 2001. Throughout his 71 years with us, Ruben was most proud of his family, his military service, his long career with the U.S. Border Patrol and Customs Service and his San Diego Chargers and Padres. Ruben was born in Carlsbad, N.M., to Albina Calderon and Pedro Carrasco. He received all his K-12 education in Carlsbad and proudly served our U.S. Air Force from 1955-59. After his discharge, he continued his education at American River College in Sacramento and later transferred to San Diego State, where received earned a Bachelor's degree. In 1968, he joined the U.S. Border Patrol as an agent assigned to Calexico. Two years later, he joined Customs and transferred to San Diego. He quickly promoted up the ranks and in 1972 was elevated to Port Director in charge of the San Diego/San Isidro border. His impressive work ethics were rewarded once again when he was assigned to head the new port of entry at the Calexico/Mexicali border where he remained in charge from 1989-97. He later returned to the San Diego/San Isidro border, until his retirement in 2001. Predeceased by his parents Albina and Pedro, two brothers Juan and Abel, his sons Derek Anthony and Ruben Joseph and two grandchildren, Ruben Rubio and Brandy Mikulas. Besides his wife, children and grandchildren, Ruben is survived by three siblings, Manuel Carrasco, Emma Gallegos and Eva Vasquez, all from New Mexico, and three great-grandchildren.

At Ruben's request burial will be private inurnment. A celebration of Ruben's life will be held on Monday, November 30, at 11:00 a.m. with a Mariachi Mass at St. Rose's Church, 5961 Franklin Blvd., Sacramento. A reception will follow in the church hall for family and friends to share and remember our Tio Ruben.

My dear brother is now with our Dear Lord. No more suffering for him. He is now looking over all of us and taking care of us. He was a really great brother and very smart and talented. I will miss him very much. Every time I see nopales, I think of him. When Mary and he came to visit, he asked me to make him nopales and I did. He really enjoyed them. Rest in peace, Ruben. You will be missed.
