Rue Evans Henry
1922-2015
Rue Evans Henry, age 92, lived and passed away on Friday, the 27th of February 2015, in Houston.
Rue was born in Alba, Texas on the 11th of March 1922. After moving to Houston at a very young age, Rue graduated from Lamar High School and attended the University of Houston for one year before transferring to Baylor University. There she received her Bachelor of Arts and Education, and met and married the love of her life upon graduating, Marshall Henry.
Rue and Marshall lived in Los Angeles, Boston, and Memphis while Marshall studied and trained to become a neurosurgeon before returning to Houston in 1952. Rue enjoyed teaching at elementary school, working for the Los Angeles Times newspaper, and Walt Disney Studios before taking on her true passion which was raising, encouraging, supporting, and mentoring her children, and later generations of the Henry family.
Rue will be remembered for her unique positive outlook on life, her fashion, style, and passion for a variety of creative outlets, including painting, designing jewelry, and floral arrangements. She loved to travel, play bridge, volunteer, and host social gatherings built around family and friends. She will also be remembered for her wit and humor, and she was most proud of the unconditional love our family has for each other.
Rue was a longtime member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, serving on the altar guild many years. She was a member of the Houston Country Club, the Harris County Medical Auxiliary, Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, a lifetime member of the Bluebird Circle, an auxiliary member of the Colonneh Club, and various societies for the arts.
Rue was preceded in death by her beloved husband of fifty-three years, Dr. Marshall Gambrell Henry, who died in 1997; her parents, Vernon Leon and Rue Gee Evans; sister, Joe Anne Evans Bailey; and brother-in-law, Bill Henry.
Rue is survived by her three sons, Randy and wife Janis, Mickey and wife Françoise, and Kevin and wife Karen; grandchildren, Ashley and husband Reed Wynne, Jr., Allison and husband Ryan Mooney, Vernon Henry and wife Keri, Clark Henry, and Marshall Henry; step-grandchildren, Nicole Stresau and husband Ashton, Lucas and Jonas Fertitta, and Romain Parny; five great-grandchildren; and her nieces, Tamy Bailey Metzger and husband Roger, and Tina Bailey Ross and husband Jack.
The Memorial Service will be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 5th of March, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road, in Houston, where The Rev. Nicolas R.D. Dyke, is to officiate. Immediately following the service, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the Bagby Parish Hall.
