COLONEL RUSSELL D. CHAPIN, US Army (Ret.)

Russell Dorsey Chapin, Colonel, U.S Army, (Ret.), died December 30, 2006, of renal faiure at Goodwin House, Alexandria, VA. The son of Nevada State Senator Nealy Henry Chapin and his wife, Ellen Dorothy Russell Chapin, he was born in Ely, NV on December 14, 1920. He was the oldest living graduate of Brown Military Academy in San Diego, CA. A graduate of the University of Washington, he rowed varsity crew and was the president of his fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi. He joined the US Army and served in Naples during World War II. After the war, he was a stockbroker in San Francisco before rejoining the Army in 1948 and making it his career for the next 25 years. After receiving his masters degree in economics and accounting at the University of Indiana, he was an instructor at the Army Finance School at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, IN and a student at the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. He served as the Comptroller of USAACOM in Frankfurt, Germany from 1963 to 1965. His last active duty assignment was Chief of the Finance Branch of the Army Office

of Personnel. His medals include the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and the Legion of Merit. He was a 60-year member of the Masons. In the l96Os, he was active in the Fathers' Association of St. Agnes School in Alexandria. As a second career, he was a real estate broker with the firm of Jacob and Roberts in Alexandria. His interests included fishing and boating, woodworking, and classical music.

His marriage to Nina Smith Chapin ended in divorce. He is survived by his daughters, Christine Chapin Moncure of Alexandria, Cathleen Chapin Fortin of Alberta, Canada, and five grandchildren.

Funeral services with Full Military Honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at the Old Post Chapel, Fort Myer, VA, with a reception to follow at the Fort Myer Officers' Club. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria, 3330 King St., Alexandria. VA 22304.
