Russell Nadeau Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2023.
Russell John Nadeau, 86, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, peacefully passed away on August 10, 2023, while at home, surrounded by the warmth and love of his cherished wife, Sally Ann Nadeau, son - Bryan Nadeau, and granddaughter - Casie Meyerkorth. He first graced the world on April 22, 1937, in New London, Connecticut, born to Bertha Mae Clark and John Nadeau.

Russell embarked on a beautiful journey of love when he united his life with Sally Hart, a true soulmate from Buffalo, New York - who he affectionately referred to as his "True Love." On November 1, 1958, they embarked on their lifelong adventure, blessed with three sons and a daughter - Russell Nadeau Jr., Lori Laumann, David Nadeau, and Bryan Nadeau. His devoted wife survived Russell, celebrating nearly 65 years of marriage. Their legacy also includes ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Russell was preceded in passing by his parents and his siblings - Edward 'Cochise' Gwiazdowski, Dolores Fox, Marguerite Anilowski, Shirley Botelho, and Nathan Wheeler. The loss of his grandson Sean Nadeau weighed heavily on his heart.

Senior Chief Russell Nadeau honorably served the United States Navy until his retirement in 1978, contributing his skills and dedication to his country. Following his naval career, fondly referred to as "Chief," he continued his service at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard until the late 1990s. Russell's service journey took a new path when he became a driver for The Williams School in Norfolk, Virginia.

The romantic tale of Russell and Sally unfolded with the backdrop of a Harley motorcycle as he rode his way into her heart. He traveled miles from Norfolk Naval Base to Buffalo to be beside her. His charm and determination won over Sally's guardians, Ted and Ike Lotz, and Ruth and Carl Rustay, etching him forever into the fabric of the Hart/Lotz/Rustay/Moran - and eventually the Nadeau - family.

Known as "Uncle Russ," he embodied joy, always ready for an adventure or a mischievous escapade. Summers on Morgan Trail were filled with poolside laughter, boating excursions, crabbing adventures, and spirited volleyball matches. Trips to Buffalo were synonymous with Uncle Russ leading the fun, sometimes teetering on the edge of mischief with his brothers-in-law, Tom and Ron.

As a grandfather, he answered to various endearing titles: Grandpa, GeeGee, and Paw Paw ("Mammie's Paw Paw"). His animated readings of "There's a Monster at the End of this Book" were filled with his infectious enthusiasm, the pages coming to life under his storytelling magic.

As a father, Russell embodied both discipline and boundless love. His strong presence was matched only by his immeasurable heart, brimming with unwavering affection for his beloved wife and children.

Russell's role as a husband was a testament to the profound connection he shared with Sally. The bond they shared was an inspiration to all who witnessed it, a living example of divine grace. Their love story reflected the kind of love that leaves an indelible mark on the world, touching lives and hearts.

As he journeyed into his later years, Russell faced health challenges restricting his once-active lifestyle. However, his love for family and friends remained unyielding, as did his passion for tinkering in his garage. Even from his wheelchair, he continued to craft wooden cradles and trucks for his great-grandchildren, each nail, putty, and stain applied with the tenderness and care that only a grandparent's heart could muster.

The family will hold a service at St. Matthews Catholic Church, where Russell will be laid to eternal rest later, and a Celebration of Life to follow.
