Newark: A funeral service for Russell Eugene Snelling will be held at 11:30am, on Veteran's Day, Saturday, November 11, 2017, at the Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home, in Newark. Pastor Winfield Strout will officiate. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, in Alexandria, where Military Funeral Honors will be provided by the Licking County Veteran's Alliance. Friends and family may call from 9:30am-11:30am, on Saturday, at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st Street.

Mr. Snelling, 95, of North Port, Florida, formerly of Thornville, passed away Friday, November 3, 2017, in Venice, Florida. He was born April 11, 1922, in Newark, a son of the late Charles E. and Martha M. (Mount) Snelling. Following his graduation in 1940 from Newark High School, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII. He then graduated from the Newark College of Commerce, where he met his future bride, Eleanor Mechling. He was a retired classical pianist, musician and piano teacher and a member of the Ohio Music Teachers Association. Over the years, he had played at Buckeye Lake with the Gene Snelling Orchestra. An avid fly fisherman, he co-founded the Land of Legend Fly Fishers, in Newark. He was a member of AmVets Post 005.

Surviving are his daughter-in-law, Linda Snelling; grandchildren, Jacob Snelling, Amiee (Josh) Swyers, Tamra Crumet; his great-grandchildren, Skyla, Gage, Josalyn and Jaxon; two nephews, Mike (Vicki) Snelling and Jeff (Debbie) Snelling; special friends, John and Judy Schmoll, Phil Walpol and Debbie Wince.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor, on January 31, 2007; his son Timothy Gail Snelling and his brother Earl Dwight Snelling.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Tidewell Hospice in Venice, Florida and to hospice volunteer Robert, for their kindness and consideration during Russell's illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tidewell Hospice, 220 Wexford Blvd, Venice, FL 34293 or Trinity United Church of Christ, Music Dept., 20 W. South St, Thornville, OH 43076.

Gene was a fine man - I knew of his musical talent but had the opportunity to know him as a talented fisherman - great times.

I was lucky enough to get to play a couple jobs with Gene's band back in the sixties,,,what a great guy and a great musician. God Bless Gene and family.
