Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3, 2010.
Rusty Simpson, 74, of Northbrook died peacefully from pancreatic cancer at Evanston Hospital on October 27. Rusty was born March 4, 1936 in Chicago and was an only child to Roger and Janet Simpson. He grew up in Evanston and graduated from Evanston High School in 1954. He attended Stanford University and Northwestern School of Law. He worked as a lawyer for Swift & Co. He went into the insurance business with IGA and worked for Rollins, Burdick, Hunter (later AON) for over 20 years. In 1990 he started his own consulting business until his retirement in 2008. He married his lifelong love, Nancy (Ellerman), in 1960. Rusty and Nancy raised three sons in Northbrook. They were active members of North Shore Country Club. Their love of travel started with many memorable family trips. The two of them would travel to 47 states, over 25 countries and four continents. His grandkids, Bryan, Taylor, Emily, Madeline, Ben, Harper and Annie were his pride and joy. His interests included family, friends, writing, travel, golf, reading, humor and gardening. He was also a published author. He is survived by Nancy, sons Roger (Pam) Simpson, Scott (Stacy) Simpson and Doug (Jenny) Simpson and his grandchildren. A Memorial Service and life celebration will be held on Thursday, November 4, 4:30 p.m. at North Shore Country Club in Glenview, IL. Please honor Rusty by wearing something orange (his favorite color). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to The Spinal Cord Society, Chicago Chapter, 6180 N. Dear Simpson Family: Wow! What a wonderful human being God blessed us with in Rusty. I will never forget the way he would always engage in everything that touched his life. He always had a bit of a "devilish" something going on. I knew Rusty as a man who enjoyed and took special pride in what he did, how he did it, but most especially in his family. Be assured this wonderful man will always remembered by me, Boo, and Jack. We send our prayers to each of you and most especially for Rusty...a dear friend. Love, David, Elizabeth, Kevin, Patrick and Jack Quilter

My deepest sympathy to your family. I worked for Aon and knew Rusty slightly, many years ago. He was a good person and a true gentleman.

When I was a young teacher at Loyola Academy, I had the privilege of being introduced to Rusty, Nancy, Doug, & the family. The gentle kindness and friendship that Rusty showed to me was quite supportive of me as both a rookie teacher and a person. What I most remember about Rusty was his ability to listen, his humility despite his intellectual gifts, and his genuine love of his family. Thank you for simply being a genuinely fine human being -- the ripples cast by your life truly go far, indeed. I send to Nancy, Doug, and the rest of Rusty's family, my condolences & my best thoughts & wishes. Chris Deger

To the Simpson Family.

I grew up with Scott and Doug and had the honor of knowing your father. Also, I had the honor of knowing Bryan and Taylor as well and how fond they were of their grandfather.

I offer my deeepest condolences and hope that the entire Simpson family knows that Rusty is at peace now.
