Ruth Erickson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 12, 2024.
Ruth Ann Veronica Erickson, 81 of West Terre Haute, Indiana left us peacefully on 6/5/24 with her family at her side. Ruth was a self-assured, creative free spirit who loved reading, learning, cultivating human connections and fostering a deep relationship with nature.

Born in Sand Lake Township, Wisconsin to Della (Kadlec) Brauer and Erwin Brauer, Ruth left home early in life to work as an au pair during her high school years in Hayward, Wisconsin before moving to the "big city" of Superior, Wisconsin. There, she would enroll at the University of Wisconsin at Superior and meet the love of her life and soon-to-be husband of 61 years, artist/educator David Erickson. Shortly after marrying David, their daughter Dea was born, followed by a move to Terre Haute, Indiana, where their son Rijon was born, and where they would spend the remainder of Ruth's life.

During her years in Terre Haute with David, Dea and Rijon, Ruth utilized her accounting training and formidable organizational skills in a number of clerical jobs, though her true self shone most brightly outside the workplace.

Ruth was not only a dedicated homemaker, she made regular trips to Wisconsin and elsewhere with the family to keep connections alive and well, especially attending the annual Cranberry Festival in Stone Lake, Wisconsin with her sisters.

Ruth was also active in the community, demonstrating the oratorical skills she honed while obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communications at Indiana State University, performing onstage at Community Theater of Terre Haute, giving numerous poetry readings - including those featuring the work of her favorite poet, Howard Nemeroff-and serving as a lector at St. Benedict Church. She also had a passion for nature which showed through her activities as an amateur botanist, rock hound and collector of four-leaf clovers. In her later years, she would also become active with OLLI - the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Ruth's children would also marry through the years. Dea to Scott Maroz, and Rijon to Debbie Broad. Debbie and Rijon also gave Ruth the joy of being an adored Grammy to their child, Bay Erickson.

Ruth is survived by her sisters Margaret, Helen, Joan and Lori, and many other treasured relatives, and was preceded in death by her two elder brothers Paul and Bill and younger sister Evelyn.

Ruth Erickson, wood and water nymph of the Northwoods and indomitable free spirit of the Wabash Valley, was an inspiration to her family, friends and community and will be sorely missed.

"They lived and laughed and loved and left." - James Joyce, "Finnegan's Wake"

A celebration of life-a "Ruth-iversary"-will be held in early September at Fairbanks Park in Terre Haute, Indiana. For more information or to be added to the guest list, contact Rijon Erickson or Dea Maroz on Facebook.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations should be made to Community Theater of Terre Haute.

I got to know Ruth through David, her husband. I was always welcomed by her no matter the time of day or circumstance of my visits or phone calls. She provided a warm engaging and intellectually stimulating space that allowed me to feel apart of a community. She also had a sly wit that more than skewered me when I became full of myself. It was always done in kindness. Her kindness really meant a lot and I will miss her. My deepest condolences to you David.

Ruth was my neighbor. Though I didn't know her long she inspired me. She came over just after we moved in to let my late husband know that his music was just a bit loud, lol. Then she baked us cookies as a house warming gift. We talked of sharing the same name; although my "Ruth" is my middle name. Last summer Ruth dug up a start from her lilac bush and brought it over to my house. We both planted it in my front yard. I will always have a little piece of Ruth in my heart and my yard. I will miss you Ruth.

Ruth did me the honor of performing at the Halcyon Gallery in a play I wrote. She gave beautiful life to the words. She was a warm and sincere person. Deepest condolences to David and her children.

She will always be Mrs Erickson to me. No matter how fast the years went by, when I saw her she always remembered me. I have fond memories of hanging out at the house with Dea when we were in high school. She was a true lady!

I have several wonderful memories, but I will start with spending time with the whole family at their home in West T, and on a few occasions, I got to visit the cabin in Wisconsin. This is where this city girl got to see a deer "walk on water". Actually, it was the frozen solid lake, but it was a fascinating memory as Ruth explained to me why the deer do this. Later in life, in my early 30´s, 40´s, and 50´s, Ruth and I would go out to lunch just to catch up. Then as she began this journey to her passing, I would visit once or twice a week to take food to her and David. I would stay for a few hours and we would talk about life, hers, David´s, the kids, and my life. It was truly a blessing to share this time with her. Ruth, you will be missed! You are loved!

Ruth was one of my very best friends. Never judging and always loving. She had been very supportive during difficult times and the most difficult, the death of my husband. She was a neighbor to my Grandparents first and then my late husband and I raised our kids in my Grandparent's home. We traded many cookies, meals and treats through the gulley between our houses. She was a lovely angel and she will be missed greatly!
